11/9/21: Considering how often Republicans wave the flag and thump the drum of patriotism, their love for country often appears thin. In comments to students at Texas A&M last month, just revealed, Sen. Ted Cruz was asked if Texas might ever secede from the Union.
After all, it worked out great the first time!

Texans might be reluctant to secede.

Good old Ted said we weren’t there “yet.” He claimed Texas was keeping the country from “going off a cliff.” For example, Texas kept voting for Ted himself, which Ted really liked. Also, Texas voted for Donald J. Trump – who would never try to drive democracy off a precipice.
“I think Texas has a responsibility to the country and I’m not ready to give up on America. I love this country,” the senator assured his audience. “Look, Texas, we’re brash, we’re not shy, we’re sometimes larger than life, but Texas right now is an amazing force keeping America from going off the cliff, keeping America grounded on the values that built this country, on the values of freedom.”
But, he continued, secession
could happen if Democrats “fundamentally destroy the country.”
He explained how that might occur: “If they pack the Supreme Court, if they make D.C. a state, if they federalize elections and massively expand voter fraud, there may come a point where it’s hopeless. We’re not there yet. And if there comes a point where it’s hopeless, then I think we take NASA, we take the military, we take the oil.”
Here, a good liberal might add to the reasons Ted might want to secede. Say, Democrats raise taxes on billionaires! Time to secede. Or push through an infrastructure bill. Time to secede! Or allow DACA recipients a path to citizenship. Time to SECEDE! Or let transgender individuals serve in the U.S. military. Time to SECEDE, MOTHER-F**KER!!! Then Texas would save the country by quitting the country – even though 46.5% of Texans happened to vote for Joe Biden in the last election and might be reluctant to quit the country simply to please Ted.
To put it plainly, Ted wants
to save the country (and his own place in the Senate) by pitting 4,260,553
Texans who voted in 2018, to send him back to Washington D.C. against the
4,045,632 who voted for Beto O’Rourke.
How dumb is Sen. Cruz, talking about “taking the military?” He must have forgotten what happened in 1861, when the U.S. military split, Robert E. Lee going one way, Ulysses S. Grant the other. Does Ted want to see Texans fighting each other, and NASA scientists engaged in combat?
Really?
He wants to secede if D.C. becomes a state, whereas D.C. already has more people living there than live in Wyoming or Vermont, and only 10,000 less than in Alaska?
Or if Democrats pack a court that Mitch McConnell and Ted helped pack by blocking the appointment of Merrick Garland?
And secede because there has been terrible “voter fraud” which no state or local courts have so far managed to find?
(Try looking it up, Trump fans.)
Yeah. Not even courts in
Texas? That’s the reason you want to kill a country? That doesn’t sound like
“love” to me.
