December 9, 2020: Trump and Trump Fans Mulling Secession

12/9/20: The big news these days would be the State of Texas’s ballsy challenge of the November election results. The Texas attorney general has filed a brief with the U.S. Supreme Court, in an effort to overturn the vote of four sister states, Georgia, Arizona, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania.

Rush Limbaugh would rather have civil war than lose his orange hero.

“Sister states?” Sounds sexist. But that’s common usage in the English language. Inanimate objects, ships for example, were once routinely referred to as feminine, and were assumed to be controlled by men.

As in “sister states.”

Anyway! What “crime” did those quadruplets commit, which Texas begged the highest court in the land to punish? Voters, by varying margins, chose Joseph Biden to be the new president, rather than stick with the old – mostly because a majority of Americans had long since decided that Trump was an insufferable ass.

Also: a grave threat to democracy.

Trump, whose crack legal team had already challenged results in more than fifty state and federal courts, and lost almost every time, invested his last remnants of hope in this Texas gambit. He referred to it as “the big one” on Wednesday. That would be opposed to the previous “big one” on Tuesday, when the U.S. Supreme Court shot down an equally bizarre legal plea, after allies asked the justices to throw out Pennsylvania’s results on only slightly different grounds.

Put plainly: Trump and his team hated mail-in votes. Not all Pennsylvanians who voted by mail were treated exactly the same. Therefore, plaintiffs asked that all 2.5 million mail-in ballots recorded in Pennsylvania be thrown out and…viola...Trump would gobble up the state’s 20 electoral votes.

The nine justices made short work of that request. They disposed of it in one eighteen-word sentence. Forty minutes after it landed in the court’s in-box, it was in the out-box again. The only word that mattered: “Denied.”

Not a single member of the U.S. Supreme Court believed there was valid reason to hear the case.

ON TODAY’S SHOW, Rush Limbaugh makes it clear, he’s unhappy with the results of the last election. “I actually think we’re trending toward secession,” he tells his purportedly patriotic Dittoheads.

Equally upset: Lou Dobbs, Fox Business host most likely to have to get a prescription for anti-depressants.

Dobbs deflated today like a Trump baby balloon stabbed by an angry Trump supporter (yeah, that happened). He could hardly bring himself to admit that the U.S. Supreme Court had turned down Loser Donald’s court challenge to the Pennsylvania results. “Well, the Supreme Court demurred: courage lacking, and the will to stand up for the Constitution now very much in question,” he said, of the decision not to even hear the idiotic case. “I mean, it really looks awful for them not to have said anything, to have not been enlightening in any way,” he griped to Greg Teufel, an attorney representing the GOP in the case. “It’s downright frustrating, but it’s also very cowardly on the part, it seems to me, of the court.”

(Whereas it seems to this blogger that Lou and Don and Don’s desperate supporters would be only too happy to subvert the courts, and the U.S. Constitution, if only they could see a clear path.)

November 9, 2021: Ted Cruz Gets the Urge to Secede

11/9/21: Considering how often Republicans wave the flag and thump the drum of patriotism, their love for country often appears thin. In comments to students at Texas A&M last month, just revealed, Sen. Ted Cruz was asked if Texas might ever secede from the Union.

After all, it worked out great the first time!

46.5% of Texans might be reluctant to secede.

Good old Ted said we weren’t there “yet.” He claimed Texas was keeping the country from “going off a cliff.” For example, Texas kept voting for Ted himself, which Ted really liked. Also, Texas voted for Donald J. Trump – who would never try to drive democracy off a precipice.

“I think Texas has a responsibility to the country and I’m not ready to give up on America. I love this country,” the senator assured his audience. “Look, Texas, we’re brash, we’re not shy, we’re sometimes larger than life, but Texas right now is an amazing force keeping America from going off the cliff, keeping America grounded on the values that built this country, on the values of freedom.”

But, he continued, secession could happen if Democrats “fundamentally destroy the country.”

He explained how that might occur: “If they pack the Supreme Court, if they make D.C. a state, if they federalize elections and massively expand voter fraud, there may come a point where it’s hopeless. We’re not there yet. And if there comes a point where it’s hopeless, then I think we take NASA, we take the military, we take the oil.”

Here, a good liberal might add to the reasons Ted might want to secede. Say, Democrats raise taxes on billionaires! Time to secede. Or push through an infrastructure bill. Time to secede! Or allow DACA recipients a path to citizenship. Time to SECEDE! Or let transgender individuals serve in the U.S. military. Time to SECEDE, MOTHER-F**KER!!! Then Texas would save the country by quitting the country – even though 46.5% of Texans happened to vote for Joe Biden in the last election and might be reluctant to quit the country simply to please Ted.

To put it plainly, Ted wants to save the country (and his own place in the Senate) by pitting 4,260,553 Texans who voted in 2018, to send him back to Washington D.C. against the 4,045,632 who voted for Beto O’Rourke.

How dumb is Sen. Cruz, talking about “taking the military?” He must have forgotten what happened in 1861, when the U.S. military split, Robert E. Lee going one way, Ulysses S. Grant the other. Does Ted want to see Texans fighting each other, and NASA scientists engaged in combat?

Really?

He wants to secede if D.C. becomes a state, whereas D.C. already has more people living there than live in Wyoming or Vermont, and only 10,000 less than in Alaska?

Or if Democrats pack a court that Mitch McConnell and Ted helped pack by blocking the appointment of Merrick Garland?

And secede because there has been terrible “voter fraud” which no state or local courts have so far managed to find?

(Try looking it up, Trump fans.)

Yeah. Not even courts in Texas? That’s the reason you want to kill a country? That doesn’t sound like “love” to me.
