September 19, 2019: Commie Birds and Bees - And Full-Bore Socialism if D.C. Becomes a State

9/19/19: It’s monsoon season in Texas. Just as scientists warned, climate change increases both the rate of water evaporation and the amount of water the atmosphere will hold. The science is simple.

This will cause more frequent “extreme weather events.”

This week, Tropical Storm Imelda dumped almost four feet of rain along the Texas coast. Catastrophic flooding resulted. Five people died, gas stations, homes, businesses, and entire towns were submerged. Flights into and out of Houston (a city which also drowned in 2017) were canceled. Runaway barges striking the I-10 bridge over the San Jacinto River forced closure of the highway. Thousands of people, pets and even livestock had to be rescued. Gov. Greg Abbott, a dedicated climate change-denier, was forced to declare a state of disaster for 13 counties.

Meanwhile, Imelda had dumped the seventh highest amount of rain ever recorded in U.S. history. Hurricane Harvey, which dumped 60 inches over Texas in 2017, set the all-time mark.

In Trumpistan, of course, all efforts to protect the environment are viewed as job-killing, commie plots.

The birds and the bees are dying.

A NEW STUDY, just released by commie scientists and published in Science magazine, warns that the commie bird population in Canada and the United States has fallen by 2.9 billion since 1970. That’s a decline of 29%.

The commie scientists warn that the decline is evidence of a “widespread ecological crisis.” They also warn that climate change has made the situation worse. Overuse of pesticides is a major factor.

Well, screw it! Who needs birds!

By the way, bee populations are also in dramatic decline across the United States. Commie beekeepers have faulted the Trump administration for approving use of chemicals they blame for the precipitous fall.

Well, who needs commie bees!

IN OTHER NEWS, Daniel McCarthy, running as a Republican for a U.S. Senate seat in Arizona, has proposed a novel solution for the immigration crisis on our southern border. McCarthy would like to shift the border slightly, by annexing Mexico and turning Mexico into a bunch of new states.

The idea of a bunch of new states – probably sending more Democratic senators to D.C.  – would likely cause “Moscow Mitch” McConnell to start shouting about “full-bore socialism” again.

Speaking of “Moscow Mitch,” the Senate Majority Leader did allow a vote on legislation yesterday which allocates $250 million to help states improve voting security before the 2020 election.

On the other hand, Republicans in Congress are freaking out because the people of Washington D.C. are talking about becoming a state. For some bizarre reason, the 702,000 people who live in the District think they have a right to have one vote in the House of Representatives and two in the Senate.

Republicans oppose the idea because – hey – the Founding Fathers!

Rep. Jim Jordan, lunatic GOP lawmaker from Ohio, made that point clearly during hearings yesterday. “This is not what the Founding Fathers intended,” he pointed out. Then again, the Founding Fathers did not intend that a president could pardon himself. (Jordan likes that idea.) Nor did the Founding Fathers, in their infinite wisdom, intend that women should vote. Or African Americans.

Or poor white men.

The Fathers did think, however, that it was a great idea to count every five African Americans the same as three white folks in determining state populations. (I think it is only a matter of time before Rep. Jordan or some other GOP stalwart suggests a return to that system.)

Here’s where debate stands. Republicans already in Congress, representing heavily-populated states like Wyoming (578,759), Alaska (731,545) and North Dakota (762,062), believe that the people of those states should have just as much say in the U.S. Senate as the people of California (39,512,223).

But, as “Moscow Mitch” sees it, it would be “full-bore socialism” to let D.C. residents have a voice. (See: 6/19/19.)

During congressional hearings yesterday a map was submitted. Advocates of statehood suggested that the federal government retain control over the National Mall, the White House, Capitol Hill, and all federal properties. The rest of the District would become the fifty-first state.

Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky, who represents the 755,000 people of the Fourth Congressional District in his state, homed in on the key issue. Why did the proposed map leave Trump International Hotel under jurisdiction of the new state? Massie, a Republican, was in a position to raise such a stupid objection because he speaks for the people of the Fourth Congressional District in his state.

Rep. Gerald E. Connolly (D-VA) pinpointed the root cause of Republican opposition to statehood, saying, “When they say it’s not about race and partisanship, you can be sure it’s about race and partisanship.”

A witness for the Republicans at the hearing called on Rep. Connolly to take his words back. Because who would ever think the Republicans would stoop to race-based partisanship!

“Never,” Connolly responded.

June 27, 2020: Sen. Tom Cotton Explains Why Wyoming is a State

6/27/20: Vice President Pence said yesterday that we had flattened the curve in this country.

I was so excited I checked the Saturday numbers. I wanted to tell everyone I knew we could go to a bar and celebrate…

WTF!

We had:

44,703 more cases.

That broke the “old” record, set Friday. Guess I’ll have to stay home and keep drinking alone.

POSTSCRIPT: On Monday, Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) offers up the opinion that Wyoming (with a population of 576,851) deserves to be a state and have two U.S. senators. Whereas Washington D.C. (with a population of 689,545) does not. If his math seems odd, his explanation smells of racism. Wyoming – predominantly white – is “a well-rounded working-class state,” Sen. Cotton exclaims. Wyoming has more miners, and loggers, and factory workers. (This blogger is surprised he didn’t cite “more cowboys.”)

D.C. – with a predominantly black population – well, they hardly have any loggers! Maybe even zero! And we all know how much the Founding Fathers talked about loggers and voting.

Democrats, Cotton warns, want D.C. to become a state and have two U.S. senators because they want to “rig the rule of our democracy.”

It is probably a good thing that Sen. Cotton was not representing the State of Arkansas in 1870. It’s more than likely he would have been against the Fifteenth Amendment, which gave African Americans the right to vote.

Wyoming gets to be a state because - more cowboys!

November 9, 2021: Ted Cruz Gets the Urge to Secede

11/9/21: Considering how often Republicans wave the flag and thump the drum of patriotism, their love for country often appears thin. In comments to students at Texas A&M last month, just revealed, Sen. Ted Cruz was asked if Texas might ever secede from the Union.

After all, it worked out great the first time!

46.5% of Texans might be reluctant to secede.

Good old Ted said we weren’t there “yet.” He claimed Texas was keeping the country from “going off a cliff.” For example, Texas kept voting for Ted himself, which Ted really liked. Also, Texas voted for Donald J. Trump – who would never try to drive democracy off a precipice.

“I think Texas has a responsibility to the country and I’m not ready to give up on America. I love this country,” the senator assured his audience. “Look, Texas, we’re brash, we’re not shy, we’re sometimes larger than life, but Texas right now is an amazing force keeping America from going off the cliff, keeping America grounded on the values that built this country, on the values of freedom.”

But, he continued, secession could happen if Democrats “fundamentally destroy the country.”

He explained how that might occur: “If they pack the Supreme Court, if they make D.C. a state, if they federalize elections and massively expand voter fraud, there may come a point where it’s hopeless. We’re not there yet. And if there comes a point where it’s hopeless, then I think we take NASA, we take the military, we take the oil.”

Here, a good liberal might add to the reasons Ted might want to secede. Say, Democrats raise taxes on billionaires! Time to secede. Or push through an infrastructure bill. Time to secede! Or allow DACA recipients a path to citizenship. Time to SECEDE! Or let transgender individuals serve in the U.S. military. Time to SECEDE, MOTHER-F**KER!!! Then Texas would save the country by quitting the country – even though 46.5% of Texans happened to vote for Joe Biden in the last election and might be reluctant to quit the country simply to please Ted.

To put it plainly, Ted wants to save the country (and his own place in the Senate) by pitting 4,260,553 Texans who voted in 2018, to send him back to Washington D.C. against the 4,045,632 who voted for Beto O’Rourke.

How dumb is Sen. Cruz, talking about “taking the military?” He must have forgotten what happened in 1861, when the U.S. military split, Robert E. Lee going one way, Ulysses S. Grant the other. Does Ted want to see Texans fighting each other, and NASA scientists engaged in combat?

Really?

He wants to secede if D.C. becomes a state, whereas D.C. already has more people living there than live in Wyoming or Vermont, and only 10,000 less than in Alaska?

Or if Democrats pack a court that Mitch McConnell and Ted helped pack by blocking the appointment of Merrick Garland?

And secede because there has been terrible “voter fraud” which no state or local courts have so far managed to find?

(Try looking it up, Trump fans.)

Yeah. Not even courts in Texas? That’s the reason you want to kill a country? That doesn’t sound like “love” to me.
