11/18/17:
General John Hyten, top U.S. nuclear commander, is asked at an international security conference
what he would do if “Old Fire and Fury” (President Trump) ordered an illegal
nuclear strike. This follows the first Senate Foreign Relations Committee
hearing in forty years to address the matter of nuclear warfare – not that
anyone thinks Donald J. Trump might be stark raving mad.
“I provide advice to the
president,” the general replies. “He’ll tell me what to do, and if it’s
illegal, guess what’s going to happen? I’m gonna say, ‘Mr. President, that’s
illegal.’ Guess what he’s going to do? He’s going to say, ‘What would be
legal?’ And we’ll come up with options of a mix of capabilities to respond to
whatever the situation is, and that’s the way it works. It’s not that complicated.”
In other words, if the president
is nuts, the generals will try to stop him before he goes too far.
(No one wants to imagine what will
happen, if Trump gives an illegal order, is told it’s illegal, and gives it
again.)
