10/3/18: Richard Ojeda, a former U.S. Army paratrooper is running as a Democrat for a seat in Congress from West Virginia. Among other positions, he led the teachers’ strike that overcame years of Republican lawmakers’ failure to raise their salaries. He favors the legalization of marijuana, in part to combat “Big Pharma” and help fight the opioid epidemic that grips his state. He likes coal jobs – but can’t stomach coal company executives. And he doesn’t like the way Trump stuffed his cabinet with billionaires such as Education Secretary Betsy DeVos.
In 2016, he says, he
voted for Trump. Now he feels the president has failed the people of his
district, West Virginia 3.
Ojeda served 24 years in the military, and rose to the rank of major, did two combat tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan. He has two Bronze Stars and thirteen tattoos to represent the names of soldiers he lost in combat. Naturally, Trump (who never got closer to combat than falling down while skiing in Colorado) responds to Ojeda’s criticism by labeling him “a total whacko.”
Trump does love the military – or so he claims.
