12/19/18: This week got off to a terrible start and, day by day, got worse. Thursday, Trump announced – via Twitter, which is how he leads America’s armed forces – that ISIS had been defeated! (Sort of like: North Korea is no longer a nuclear threat.) He was going to pull U.S. troops out of Syria immediately and reduce our footprint in Afghanistan by at least half.
You could sense this might not go over well with most Americans
when the Russians quickly agreed a U.S. withdrawal in the Middle East would be
a brilliant idea.
The Taliban also loved it. “The 17-year-long struggle and sacrifices of
thousands of our people finally yielded fruit,” said a Taliban commander. “We proved
it to the entire world that we defeated the self-proclaimed world’s lone super
power.”
