January 20, 2017: Donald J. Trump is sworn in as 45th President of the United States. He doesn’t grab any woman on the podium by the pussy. So, you could argue he’s off to a good start. 

 

“American carnage” optimism from a new president. 

In his Inaugural Address he offers “cheery” assessment. We have “an education system, flush with cash, but which leaves our young and beautiful students deprived of knowledge, and the crime and gangs and drugs that have stolen too many lives and robbed our country of so much unrealized potential.” 

We live in a time of “American carnage,” Trump says. 

No way of knowing if he’s thinking about police shootings of unarmed black citizens. Not likely. 

Nor does he offer tips on how to deal with mass shootings. This has much to do with the fact the N.R.A. loves him and his biggest fans still believe Sandy Hook was staged by President Obama. 

He does highlight “the sad depletion of our military.” This seems odd since U.S. military spending is already 
greater than the military spending of the next seven top countries combined. 

No matter. He’s going to see that we spend more.

Sharp-eyed reporters for Time magazine notice something odd going on behind the scenes. “Within hours of President Trump’s Inauguration,” they report, “the White House website was stripped of any mention of climate change or the effort to fight it.” Donald, of course, believes climate change is “a hoax.” 

Donald is a nincompoop; and future generations are going to be screwed.

 

BLOGGER’S NOTE: We won’t learn this until July 2021, but the out-going president leaves behind a thoughtful letter for the new man about to take a seat in the Oval Office. 

Looking back four and a half years later, this blogger realizes that an almost prophetic comment from President Obama comes in this paragraph: 

Third, we are just temporary occupants of this office. That makes us guardians of those democratic institutions and traditions – like rule of law, separation of powers, equal protection and civil liberties – that our forebears fought and bled for. Regardless of the push and pull of daily politics, it’s up to us to leave those instruments of our democracy at least as strong as we found them.

 

Trump never did learn or care to learn to follow that advice.

3/10/17: Bureau of Labor Statistics show the economy added 235,000 jobs in February, and unemployment dipped to 4.6%. Sean Spicer is asked if the president still believes the numbers are “totally fiction” and “phony,” as Trump insisted when Obama was adding an average of 214,000 jobs monthly in his second term. 

Spicer replies: “They may have been phony in the past, but it’s very real now [emphasis added].” (See: 4/8/17.)  

You had to be a moron to swallow that line. Many Trump supporters swallow it without a thought.

3/13/17: The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office announces that under the proposed GOP health care plan, 14 million fewer Americans will have insurance in 2018, 24 million fewer in 2026.  

It took seven years for Republicans to craft this gem.

January 21, 2018: Sen. Duckworth Has a Message for Cadet Bone Spurs

 

1/21/18: As breakfast time approaches in Washington D.C., Trump can take solace knowing all Americans and all peoples round the globe love him. 

He knows this to be true because he binge-watches Fox News. Did you realize that Brad Blakeman gave the president excellent marks for his first year on the throne? Well, the president believes we all should know. “Thank you to Brad Blakeman on @FoxNews for grading year one of my presidency with an ‘A’ - and likewise to Doug Schoen for the very good grade and statements,” he tweets. 

 

“A message for Cadet Bone Spurs.” 

Year Two begins with Congress unable to pass a budget. There are warnings that the deficit for 2018 may surpass $1 trillion. The U.S. Treasury reports it will borrow $441 billion during the first quarter of this year. This kind of deficit spending used to bother GOP “fiscal hawks.” 

Now Paul Ryan pecks for corn and clucks like a hen. 

Meanwhile, the reputation of the United States has suffered grievously in a year under Trump. To be more precise: It has reached the lowest level ever recorded. According to Gallup, respect for America was 48 percent during President Obama’s final year in office. Under Trump it stands at 30 percent. 

Respect has fallen by at least 10 percentage points in countries normally our allies. These include Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Great Britain, Japan, and South Korea. And approval fell by 40 points in Norway. That’s the place where the president says all the best potential immigrants live! (See: 1/11/18.)

 

With the government shut down, all the White House toadies are making the cable news rounds, blaming Democrats. According to Kellyanne Conway, Democrats hate the U.S. military. 

Senator Tammy Duckworth of Illinois hits back. (Duckworth lost both legs in 2004, when the helicopter she was piloting was shot down near Taji, Iraq.) In a speech on the Senate floor, she responds to the president’s claims that Democrats hate the military: 

I will not be lectured about what our military needs by a five deferment draft-dodger. And I have a message for Cadet Bone Spurs: If you cared about our military, you’d stop baiting Kim Jong-un into a war that could put 85,000 American troops and millions of innocent civilians in danger.

 

Now we wait. Will Trump offer up some furious tweet-insult in response? Perhaps he’ll howl: “Duckworth is no hero. I like people who don’t get shot down and lose both legs.” The man has no class.

May 7, 2018: Lying to Help a Liar

 

5/7/18: The Rudy Giuliani Traveling Circus makes the talk show rounds. Now he says the president wants to testify in the Mueller probe. 

However, Rudy insists that Trump shouldn’t have to. If he did, the president would probably invoke the Fifth Amendment.

No one, least of all Rudy, can say exactly what Trump knew about the payoff to Stormy Daniels, or when he knew what he knew, or answer inquiries about other possible payments. In yet another disastrous interview, Rudy responds to a question by George Stephanopoulos on the show This Week. Could Lawyer Cohen have made more payments to more women? 

“I have no knowledge of that,” Giuliani winces and blinks. “But I would think if it was necessary, yes.” 

 

Even Kellyanne Conway, glibbest of liars, her salary paid by taxpayers, told Jake Tapper on CNN she had no idea if similar payoffs were made to anyone else. For once she dared not risk a definitive “no.” 

“They didn’t cross my desk as campaign manager,” she dodged. “And I would also tell you that I’m happy to answer these questions, but I have limited visibility into what Mayor Giuliani is talking about, because, politely, he is the president’s counsel. I am the president's counselor,” she said. 

Different liars, different jobs. 


She insisted that Trump had not been lying when he told reporters that he did not know about the $130,000 payment to Stormy Daniels. 

“No,” he had said. He did not elaborate. 

Pressed again on why Cohen would have made the payment, Trump had responded: “You’ll have to ask Michael Cohen. Michael is my attorney. You’ll have to ask Michael.” Only Cohen knew what was going on. Now Conway insisted the Big Orange Buffoon still wasn’t lying. 

So, she still wasn’t lying. 

 

The unenviable position of lying to help a liar. 

Conway tap-danced and told Tapper that you had to look at the president’s three recent tweets to understand the point he had been trying to make. “I’m going to relay to you what the president has told me, which is the best I can do. He didn’t know it at the time the payment occurred.” 

Tapper refused to let Conway off the hook.  

He noted that reporters on Air Force One had asked the president, “Did you know about the $130,000 payment to Stormy Daniels?” 

He responded, “No. No. What else?” 

The immediate follow up question was, “Do you know where he [Cohen] got the money to make that payment?” 

“No. I don’t know,” Trump replied. 

“That’s present tense,” Tapper pointed out to Conway. “But he did know.”

 

Conway was in the unenviable position of lying to help a liar. Giuliani had made her lie for Sunday morning obsolete. He had admitted that Trump paid Cohen back over several months – and that he paid him back before he denied knowing about the matter on Air Force One. 

Even Fox News was forced to report this story, because Giuliani had been speaking on Fox News. They just didn’t choose to put 1 + 1 together and tax the brains of loyal viewers. 

 

POSTSCRIPT: We learn that U.S. Senate investigators want to know if Jill Stein’s Green Party got money from the Russians during the 2016 campaign. 

Stein’s name has been linked to Don Jr. and the Senate’s interest is probably not good news for Don Jr. or the Trump team.

October 29, 2018: The Three Stooges - Kellyanne Conway, Nikki Haley, and Sarah Huckabee Sanders Defend President Trump

 

10/29/18: Kellyanne Conway, whose salary taxpayers sadly foot, appears on Fox News. She is there to defend the president. Really, that is the only job this benighted woman performs. 

Did Trump’s daily dosage of hate in any way fuel the actions of any of this week’s haters? Oh, no, she explains. The true victims are people like herself, Conway says, people who are religious. What led the killers and would-be-killers to act? “The anti-religiosity in this country that is somehow in vogue...making fun of people who express religion, the late-night comedians, the unfunny people who go on TV...It’s always anti-religious,” she tells the Fox News host. 

Yes, those comedians with their…humor…making people hate others and go buy automatic weapons and stockpile ammo. 

Conway cites Dylan Roof, an avowed white supremacist, who shot up a church in South Carolina in 2015. She fails to mention a white Kentucky man who murdered two African Americans in a Kroger store just days earlier – after yanking at the door of a nearby African American church and finding it closed. It wasn’t the white supremacist beliefs of both shooters that caused them to start blasting. It was all those comics and their punch lines. 

Finally, to wrap up one of the dumbest arguments ever put forward by any aide for any president, in any century, Conway opines, “this is no time to be driving God out of the public square.”


Comedians cause the problem!


 

Former U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley also comes to Trump’s defense and says this is no time for assigning blame. Nobody blamed Obama for the shooting in Charleston, she says. So why blame President Trump now? This seems odd because in 2016, during the campaign, Haley, then governor of South Carolina, specifically blamed Trump and his hateful diatribes for the Charleston shooting. “I know what that rhetoric can do. I saw it happen,” she said, at the time.

SINCE WE’RE TALKING about stooges, let’s not skip over Press Secretary Pinocchio. Today Sarah Sanders claimed that her boss won the popular vote by an “overwhelming majority” in 2016. 

This was her first press briefing in weeks; but Pinocchio proved that even a long layoff had not reduced her ability to conjure untruths from thin air. She also said that Trump bore no responsibility for any of the violence in recent days. 

In fact, Sanders made the astonishing claim that the press was responsible for stirring up the people who sent pipe bombs to leading Democratic figures, both in and out of office, and for convincing the anti-Semite to shoot up the Pittsburgh synagogue. How did the press do it? By being mean to the president. 

“You guys have a huge responsibility to play in the divisive nature of this country, when 90 percent of the coverage of everything this president does is negative despite the fact that the country is going extremely well,” she grumbled, “despite the fact that this president is delivering on exactly what he said he was going to do if elected. And he was elected by the overwhelming majority of 63 million Americans who came out and supported him and wanted to see his policies enacted.”

May 23, 2019: An Oval Office Cult

 

5/23/19: Trump goes off script during a meeting with American farmers  and lays into Speaker Pelosi again, labeling her “crazy Nancy,” and calling her a “mess.” “They say she’s disintegrating before their eyes,” the president claims. He doesn’t explain who “they” are, which means he’s making sh*t up again. The president is basically his own “anonymous source.” 

 

It's an Oval Office cult. 

He says he’s an “extremely stable genius,” even though he walked out of a meeting with top Democratic lawmakers the day before. To prove it, he calls on his sycophants to vouch for his stability and genius. 

Kellyanne Conway goes first. By now we all know if Trump was prancing around the White House in pink lace panties, she’d insist he was wearing a stylish tuxedo and looked like Adonis. Yes, she tells reporters, her boss was “very calm.” 

Trump calls up Mercedes Schlapp, Larry Kudlow, and Press Secretary Pinocchio, who agree in turn. The president was “very calm.” 

It’s an Oval Office cult.

December 4, 2019: One Legal Scholar Opposes Impeachment, 881 Are in Favor

 

12/4/19: Four legal scholars testify before the House Judiciary Committee. Three say Trump should be impeached. 

One says he shouldn’t. Republicans pound the dais and shout that the impeachment hoax is over!

Meanwhile, an open letter begins circulating. Legal scholars from almost every prestigious U.S. college and university sign. William & Mary is represented, and Emory, and the John Marshall School of Law. Professors from Duke and Michigan sign. Experts on the U.S. Constitution from Columbia and the University of Alabama add their names. Men and women versed in the wisdom of the Founding Fathers, from Yale and Seattle University, Penn and Case Western, Catholic University and SMU, are listed. The roll grows to 878 names: 

We, the undersigned legal scholars, have concluded that President Trump engaged in impeachable conduct.

 

We do not reach this conclusion lightly. The Founders did not make impeachment available for disagreements over policy, even profound ones, nor for extreme distaste for the manner in which the President executes his office. Only “Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors” warrant impeachment. But there is overwhelming evidence that President Trump betrayed his oath of office by seeking to use presidential power to pressure a foreign government to help him distort an American election, for his personal and political benefit, at the direct expense of national security interests as determined by Congress.

“Listen to the witnesses.” 

TWO FORMER Republican senators, William Cohen of Maine and Slade Groton of Washington, appear on CNN and lay out their positions regarding the impeachment of President Trump. 

Host Erin Burnett asks Cohen if he believes the entire process is “a sham,” as the president and his champions insist. 

“I would say, listen to the witnesses. Listen to the professionals who came before the Congress to swear under oath,” Cohen replies. “You’re saying that all those people who came before the committee are lying under oath.” 

In Cohen’s eyes, that makes no sense. He urges lawmakers “to go back and look at the entire spectrum from the Mueller report. There’s a pattern here of (Trump) saying, ‘I’m not beholden to anyone.’” 

Gorton says he feels “sorry for the people who are tying themselves to the President. They should be waiting to hear all the facts. I think it’s very easy for them to determine that the President did this, did what he’s accused of [emphasis added],” Gorton adds. “It’s one thing to say, we don’t think that arises to the importance to take a man out of the presidential office. It’s quite another to denounce it in advance when you don’t know what there’s going to be presented to you.”

What does Leviticus say about invitro fertilization? 

THE REPUBLICAN-CONTROLLED U.S. Senate confirms another judge for a lifetime position. The vote, 49 in favor (every Republican except Susan Collins), 44 against (every Democrat present, plus Collins) puts Sarah Pitlyk in judicial robes, despite the fact she has never tried a case. 

The American Bar Association unanimously rated her “not qualified” for the job. But Sen. Milksop McConnell decided he had no choice but to do the bidding of President “I’m Not Impeached Yet” Trump. 

Abortion is one issue on which Pitlyk may have a chance to rule. Pitlyk doesn’t just want to stop abortion. She’s against fertility treatments. She opposes the use of surrogates. In a legal brief she co-authored in opposition to California regulations related to such procedures, Pitlyk claimed thatthe practice of surrogacy has grave effects on society, such as diminished respect for motherhood and the unique mother-child bond.” Pitlyk has argued that surrogacy “is harmful to mothers and children, so it’s a practice society should not be enforcing.” 

At the same time, Pitlyk has argued that frozen embryos should be recognized as human beings under the law. When couples successfully fertilize an embryo and have a child, or two, or three, and extra embryos remain, Judge Pitlyk would want us to agree those unused embryos are “children” and should not be “killed.” Surrogacy, though – actual children being born – no way!  

That’s bad for society. 

Those unused embryos would be stored forever, or at least till the parents are dead – because – that’s what the Bible says? Apparently, invitro fertilization is explained in Leviticus.

Ms. Conway shows up on Fox & Friends for a friendly chat. Well, she grumps, those other leaders were “childish.” They weren’t denouncing Trump’s policies because his policies are great! 

The greatest, most stupendously perfect policies ever!!!!!!!!! 

What was it really about?” Conway asks, before answering her own question. “It was about the fact that President Trump commands a room, and he does. And maybe that makes a couple of people jealous.”

April 14-15, 2020: President "Captain Bligh" Trump Claims Absolute Power

 

4/14-15/20: Today’s COVID-19 update has it all, starting with death and economic destruction, which isn’t funny in the least.

 

Amidst all the suffering and pain, we have the president proudly comparing himself to the villainous Captain Bligh. Throw in sex dolls, a Kellyanne Conway sighting which in no way relates to sex dolls and a lesson on the Tenth Amendment.

First, the pain: 2,072,269 confirmed cases of the COVID-19 virus, worldwide. The United States with the most of any nation on earth: 640,185 cases. The U.S. with the highest number of deaths: 28,306.

 

Grim numbers, growing grimmer.

 

We also have evidence of avalanching economic damage. The International Monetary Fund  warns that the downturn coming will be the worst since the Great Depression. Warning lights are blinking across the board. Retail sales in the U.S. plunged 8.7% in March, the biggest monthly drop by far, going back to 1967. Bank profits are being hammered, with JPMorgan Chase down 69% and Wells Fargo 89%. Oil has dropped below $20 a barrel, good news for drivers if we had anywhere to go. That’s bad news for oil producing nations like Russia and Saudi Arabia, fracking operators in Eastern Ohio and Western Pennsylvania, and U.S. workers manning the machinery. The city government of Tulsa, Oklahoma, an oil town, has had to institute a hiring freeze. Budgets are going to be busting in cities and towns from Boston to Bakersfield. Tattoo artists don’t have customers to tattoo. No one wants pet sitters to come to their homes. Elvis-impersonators, street musicians, and mimes have nowhere to ply their skills.


 

Most shocking of all, the sex doll business is deflating. Normally, you might expect that a company like Silicon Wives would be doing a booming business, what with millions of lonely guys stuck at home dreaming of silicon babes. Sadly, China supplies most of the silicon ladies Americans covet for silicon sex. So even businesses that deal in sex dolls are hurting.

 

The question is who can save us – if anyone can. And here we have a Kellyanne Conway sighting.

 

The president has made no secret of his desire to reboot the U.S. economy, on or before May 1. Most health experts, including his own top adviser, Dr. Anthony Fauci, warn that would be too soon. But to be fair, not that Trump is ever fair to opponents, he can’t win. He must choose between the Scylla of deadly virus and the Charybdis of cratering commerce.

 

We all know where the president’s true focus lies. The “jobs report” that consumes him comes out on the night of November 3, when the votes in the next election are counted. With that report foremost in mind, Trump is talking more and more about ditching the social distancing and getting America rolling again.

 

This is where Kellyanne comes in. “The most important thing to recognize,” she said on the Fox Business Network yesterday, “is that most suited, best person to juice the Donald Trump economy is Donald Trump.”

 

The problem, of course, is that while Trump might want to open everything back up and start bragging about his job-creating magic again, most Americans (81% in a poll this week) prefer to keep social distancing in place, even if it means further damage to the economy. Plus, there’s that whole Tenth Amendment thing.

“The federal government does not have absolute power.”

 

WHEN TRUMP insisted during his wild and wooly Monday press conference that he had “total control” and could order states to open up, even conservatives realized this was an authoritarian bridge too far. Sen. Marco Rubio said the final decision would rest with the governors of the territories and states. Federal guidance might help them decide, Rubio admitted. “But the Constitution and common sense dictates these decisions be made at the state level.”

 

“The federal government does not have absolute power,” Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming tweeted in response to Trump’s announcement of “total control.”

 

Then she quoted the Tenth Amendment, just to help the orange galoot in the White House figure it out.

 

Even a staunch proponent of presidential power like John Yoo, who argued that George W. Bush had the right to torture terrorist suspects if he wanted, blasted Trump for overreach.

 

“The federal government does not have that power. The Constitution’s grant of limited, enumerated powers to the national government does not include the right to regulate either public health or all business in the land,” Yoo pointed out. “Our federal system reserves the leading role over public health to state governors. States possess the ‘police power’ to regulate virtually all activity within their borders.”

 

Blown off course by powerful conservative winds, Trump made it plain he planned to steer a bizarre new course on Tuesday. Inexplicably, he compared himself, in a tweet, to Captain Bligh:

 

 

 

After what had to be one of the epic presidential temper tantrums during Monday’s press conference, Trump proved Tuesday that he was no more capable of introspection than a 239-pound bag of cement. Faced with growing criticism as the virus spread, as Americans died by the hundreds every day, and the economy imploded, Trump was implying that he had what the governors needed. He had the medical supplies, the support personnel, the funds. If people didn’t kiss his ass and tell him he was the greatest sea captain ever to sail the Seven Seas well it would be, “So easy.”

 

To what?  To deny them help? To deny the people of certain states the resources needed to stop the spread of COVID-19?

 

This, then, was who this terrible human being really is.

A QUICK ROUNDUP OF OTHER important developments: Trump announced that the U.S. would be halting funding to the World Health Organization. Typically, we provide between $400 and $500 million annually. Trump said he was taking this action because the WHO had been “pro-China” in the way it described the outbreak and had a “role in severely mismanaging and covering up the spread of the coronavirus.”

 

In other words, it was the WHO that screwed up.

 

And China.

 

Not Trump.

 

The stock market rose again Tuesday, then fell back Wednesday, with the Dow Jones settling at 23,504. Economists are offering up all kinds of dire predictions. A poll of voters under age 45 shows that 20% have lost jobs, 19% have had hours reduced, and 13% are furloughed. Goldman Sachs has warned that the economic damage will be four times as great as during the Great Recession. The headline number for unemployment is expected to hit 15%, and analysists say, “even this understates the severity of the situation.” Millions more will give up looking for work.

 

(The experts predict an “unprecedented” rebound in the second half of this year. Hopefully, they’re right.)

 

Meanwhile, you might argue that President Trump has been provided with a clear case study of what happens when prompt action to arrest the spread of the virus is not taken. South Dakota has been one of a handful of states that managed to avoid stay-at-home orders. Now the city of Sioux Falls is one of the hottest spots in the United States for the spread of the virus. 

According to the Sioux Falls Argus Leader, the outbreak of COVID-19 that forced closure of the Smithfield Foods pork packing plant a few days ago has left 518 workers infected. Another 126 infections have been traced back to the plant. An employee in the electronics department at Walmart is sick. Two workers at StarMark Cabinetry are ill. That business is closed for two weeks. An employee at Get-n-Go and another at O’Reilly Auto Parts are ailing. A daycare worker at Truks-N-Trykes has tested positive, meaning that every other employee, every member of every other employee’s family, every child who uses the facility, and every family member of every child at Truks-N-Trykes is now at risk. 

So it goes, day after awful day.
