July 3, 2018: Coal Miners Love Trump - and the Head of EPA Is A Crook

7/3/18: E.P.A. Administrator Scott Pruitt continues to lead in the race to be declared the worst cabinet member since Albert B. Fall, Secretary of the Interior and brains behind the Teapot Dome Scandal.

See 1923 for details.

Leaked information from congressional investigations shows Pruitt routinely used aides paid for by “We, the People,” to schedule personal travel and run errands. He continued to spend lavishly on travel even after E.P.A. officials warned him. He asked an aide to violate federal law and call around to political groups that might like knowing they had a friend at the E.P.A. And, hey, could they find a job for his lovely wife, Marilyn? He thought a starting salary of $200,000 sounded about right.

For some odd reason, Pruitt routinely asked aides to put charges for his hotel rooms on their credit cards when they traveled.

IN ALABAMA, Randy Johnson takes heart, knowing Donald Trump will fight and win the “War on Coal.” Having retired from the coal mining business in 2014, Mr. Johnson, 71, decides coal is back!

He spends $2.7 million on a 220-ton excavator, buys up an available tract of land, and starts fresh, mining once again. His 22 employees paint “Trump” in white block letters on the side of the new machine and Trump (the machine, not the golfing fool in the White House) goes to work.

In a recent letter to the White House, Johnson wrote the president appreciatively, We know you ‘get it’ and you love America and coal miners. Keep fighting for us and we will stand with you.”

This blogger realizes that good people can have good reasons to vote for Trump. For example, you believe he’ll save the industry that employs you. Coal mining, obviously.

This does not mean climate change is a hoax; and anyone who says it is – such as our president – is a nitwit.

September 3, 2019: Trump Gets Mad at Weathermen and Weatherwomen - Plus, Gay Conversion Hypocrisy

9/3/19: We learn that President Trump went golfing twice this past weekend. The White House had been trying to make it appear as if he was focused on hurricane preparedness, like a real leader.

Press Secretary Grisham did her best to waltz round the topic when asked by reporters. (See: 8/31/19.)

At the same time, Trump got mad after he said Alabama was one of several states likely to get hit hard by Hurricane Dorian. The National Weather Service quickly corrected his mistake and assured Alabamians they were safe.

ABC News chief White House correspondent Jonathan Karl then fact-checked the president and Trump got mad because facts made him look bad.

So: he picked a fight with the weathermen and weatherwomen.

Conversion therapy is not just a lie, but it’s very harmful, because it’s false advertising.”

Mr. Game.

IN OTHER NEWS conservatives won’t like, McKrae Game, who ran the nation’s largest “gay conversion” ministry for twenty years, has come out and admitted he’s gay. He says he’s sorry for all the gays who had to suffer through his conversion sessions. “Conversion therapy is not just a lie, but it’s very harmful,” he admits, “because it’s false advertising.”

Game joins the likes of David Matheson, once a prominent “gay conversion” expert who turned out to be…gay…Norman Goldwasser, big proponent of making the choice to quit being gay, who posted on gay hookup websites…and got caught…Rev. Ted Haggard, who had to resign as president of the National Evangelicals Association…after a male prostitute said he smoked meth with Haggard and was paid for having sex…and assorted hypocrites on the right.

September 10, 2019: This Story Is the Story of Who Trump Is

9/10/19: National Security Adviser John Bolton has been fired. Or resigned. Trump says he fired Bolton. Bolton says no. He resigned. The Trump White House can’t even get that detail right.

Craig McLean, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

And on a similar note, the Trump administration can’t get the story of the Hurricane that Almost Hit Alabama right, either.

That story about a weather event, unimportant in itself, encapsulates much of what makes Trump unfit to lead this great nation. Nobody will remember this tale ten years from now, save the scientists involved. Alabama was not hit. Alabamians will not look back in a decade and remember the day Trump said they should head for cover because the storm was a killer, plowing their way.

This story is the story of who Trump is. It begins with a harmless mistake, one any of us could make. Trump tweets dozens of times about Hurricane Dorian. That’s fine. In one, possibly a mix-up, he says Alabama will be hit hard. The Birmingham office of the National Weather Service finds itself swamped with frightened callers inquiring what they should do. A correction is issued.

Alabama is NOT under threat.

When news services pick up on Trump’s mistake, he’s too petty to admit an ordinary error. First, he tries to lie his way out of a predicament that should have been no predicament at all. Just admit a simple mistake and the story is over. He can’t do it. And that leads to the famous Sharpie Weather Map (see: 9/5/19), which only opened the president up to well-deserved ridicule.

That caused Trump to explode. Orders went out to federal agencies. Come to his defense. Make it sound as if the president was right all along.

If not, heads would roll.

The agency “must, maintain standards of scientific integrity.”

Three sources tell The New York Times that Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross, whose department includes the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration which includes the National Weather Service leaped into action. Back up the president’s claim, Wilbur warned, or firings at the National Weather Service would result. An unsigned statement was issued, saying Trump was right all along.

The scientists were not amused. Alabama had never been under threat. Peggy E. Gustafson, inspector general for the National Weather Service, wrote in a message to staff that the agency “must, maintain standards of scientific integrity.” The order to support the president’s mistake, she wrote, calls “into question the NWS’s processes, scientific independence, and ability to communicate accurate and timely weather warnings and data to the nation in times of national emergency.”

Gustafson wasn’t the only scientist to smell a skunk. As Time noted,

Director Louis Uccellini said forecasters in Birmingham did the right thing Sept. 1 when they tried to combat public panic and rumors that Dorian posed a threat to Alabama. It was only later that they found out the source of the mistaken information, he said. Speaking at a meeting of the National Weather Association, Uccellini said Birmingham forecasters “did what any office would do to protect the public.”

“They did that with one thing in mind: public safety,” said Uccellini, who prompted a standing ovation from hundreds of forecasters by asking members of the Birmingham weather staff to stand. Earlier, the president of the 2,100-member association, Paul Schlatter, said any forecast office “would have done the exact same thing” as the Birmingham forecast office.

Kevin Laws, Science and Operations Officer for the weather service in Birmingham, was asked if he’d like to add further comment. “I think the speech speaks for itself,” he told reporters.

Craig McLean, acting chief scientist at NOAA, also made clear what he thought of a misguided effort to back Trump. “My understanding,” he wrote in a memo to staff, “is that this intervention to contradict the forecaster was not based on science but on external factors including reputation and appearance, or simply put, political.”

McLean was scathing in his letter. First, he insisted that the Birmingham staff “corrected any public misunderstanding [due to the president’s tweets] in an expert and timely way as they should.”

Second, he noted that the NOAA Scientific Integrity Policy tells all agency employees to “approach all scientific activities with honesty, objectively, and completely, without allegiance to individuals, organizations, or ideology [emphasis added].”

Finally, he warned that the NOAA press release backing Trump up, “compromises the ability of NOAA to convey life-saving information” and “violated NOAA’s policies of scientific integrity.” That policy states that individuals higher up the chain of command should not “intimidate or coerce employees, contractors, recipients of financial assistance awards, or others to alter or censor scientific findings.”

So, there you had it: On one side, a petty, dictatorially-inclined President Trump, backed by his toadies.

On the other side you had truth and science and plenty of witnesses to prove Trump and his aides lied.

“You’re basically stuck looking after a 4-year-old now.”

THIS BRINGS US, finally, to a story posted recently by the Business Insider, which clearly relates.

That story highlighted the dangers posed by an increasingly unbalanced, erratic, enraged President Trump.

“No one knows what to expect from him anymore,” one former White House official [told Business Insider]. “His mood changes from one minute to the next based on some headline or tweet, and the next thing you know his entire schedule gets tossed out the window because he’s losing his s---.

“People are used to the president saying things that aren’t true, but this Alabama stuff is another story. This was the president sending out patently false information about a national-emergency situation as it was unfolding.”

The story continues, with sources asking for anonymity, because they fear retribution from Trump.

“He’s deteriorating in plain sight,” one Republican strategist who’s in frequent contact with the White House told Insider on Friday.

Asked why the president was obsessed with Alabama instead of the states that would actually be affected by the storm, the strategist said, “you should ask a psychiatrist about that; I’m not sure I’m qualified to comment.”

Nor was this behavior entirely new.

More than that, one person who was close to Trump’s legal team during the Russia investigation told Insider his public statements were “nothing compared to what he’s like behind closed doors.”

“He’s like a bull seeing red,” this person added. “There’s just no getting through to him, and you can kiss your plans for the day goodbye because you’re basically stuck looking after a 4-year-old now.”

At this point, some White House aide should take away all of Trump’s Sharpies before he pokes himself in the eye.

THE GOVERNMENT ACCOUNTABILITY OFFICE announces results of a study on longevity begun in 1992.

As Spock used to say: “Prosper, and live long.” Of all the richest Americans, in their 50s and 60s, alive in 1992, 75% were still alive in 2014. For those in the poorest fifth, only 52% were still above turf.

In another sign that something is not right in America today, the GAO study showed that “the poorest 40 percent of women actually have lower life expectancies than their mothers did.”

Finally, we learn that the GOP plan to kill Obamacare and make America great again, is working. The percentage of Americans with no insurance at all increased last year from 7.9% of the population to 8.5%. That means two million more people can’t afford to go to the emergency room if need be.

April 1, 2021: Tucker Carlson Can't Tell the Difference between Hotels and Internment Camps

April 1, 2021: Here’s your joke for today. A state legislature decides to ban yoga in gym class in public schools because practicing yoga might lead good Christian students to turn to…Hinduism!

No, wait. That’s true.

The Alabama legislature first passed the ban against pagan flexibility twenty-eight years ago. In this period of great stress for all of us, including students, a move was afoot to allow yoga in grades K-12.

But no. That move has now been halted.

I do not earn millions annually ginning up fear and outrage to support a certain kind of Fox-approved political agenda.

This is a hotel.

YESTERDAY, our topic was “creepiness.” Today, our topic is April fools. Which reminds me. Tucker Carlson was fired up again last night.

He wanted to warn viewers that Canada was taking steps toward “legitimately dangerous authoritarianism.” How so? The Trudeau government was advising Canadian citizens and other travelers that they would have to be tested for COVID-19 if they intended to fly to that country. If they tested positive, they’d have to quarantine immediately in designated government facilities. “This is not optional,” Prime Minister Trudeau explained on Twitter. Even those testing negative would have to quarantine for three days.

That was it for Carlson!

Trudeau, he warned, was creating “internment camps.” For…fourteen days? Maybe just three????

Somehow, I was not getting the feeling Tucker was getting, because I do not earn millions annually ginning up fear and outrage to support a certain kind of Fox-approved political agenda.

Instead, as a former history teacher, when I thought about dangerous authoritarianism and internment camps, I found myself conjuring up Nazi gas chambers. I thought about barbed-wire prisons for Japanese Americans in 1942, frostbitten prisoners in frozen Siberian wastelands in the Soviet Union, and North Korea’s starvation of political prisoners today.

Not Carlson, Carlson was outraged. He wanted fans to be outraged, too. “Suddenly,” he continued, “Canada is a flagrant violator of the most basic human rights” in the world. He compared Trudeau to Mussolini. He threw in an attack on liberalism. He managed to squeeze in a snide remark about “identity politics.” He grimaced and predicted that in these camps there would be “shortages of food and water, you could be sexually assaulted.” Eventually, he wondered: Would the U.S. consider internment camps if Dr. Fauci suggested the same?

I decide to check out these Canadian “internment camps.” It turns out we’re talking “government-authorized hotels.” Travelers must make their own quarantine plans, which may include staying in places of their own choosing, so long as their plans meet certain requirements.

For example, many Canadians could make plans to quarantine…in their own…homes. Oh, the inhumanity.

You must also submit your plan to ArriveCan before entering or re-entering the country. So, if you feared a shortage of food, you might bring along fourteen packages of Oreos in your carry-on luggage. Or your plan could be to have room service bring food to your door if you were in one of the authorized hotels.

To avoid shortages of water, you should not plan to stay at authorized hotels or other places of your choosing unless they had….

Indoor plumbing.

In other words, Tucker was being Tucker.

A giant ass.

This is an internment camp.

(Other recent Carlson horror stories include President Biden’s “fake” loving marriage; President Biden’s junkyard dog; the “cancel culture” attack on Dr. Seuss, transgender individuals invading girls’ sports, and a female reporter from The New York Times writing about her experience with online harassment. That last horror story took Tucker two entire shows to work out of his system.)

April 7, 2021: Are Democratic Cities Really Unsafe?

4/7/21: Did you know that as of today, 37 percent of the population of New York City is foreign-born?

Plus, the city has a Democratic mayor.

____________________

Maybe Democrats and immigrants aren’t the problem.

____________________

We all remember how then-President Trump enjoyed talking about killers and rapists sneaking across the border, and Democratic mayors who failed to keep their cities safe. Never doubting a single syllable that escaped from our former president’s mouth, I had to assume people in New York City must be getting murdered at a phenomenal rate. The city had to be a veritable ghost town by now.

I was surprised. The city suffered 289 murders in 2018. (I use that figure, because in a story about the most dangerous states, USA Today uses crime statistics from that year.)

Are Republican controlled places safer? I checked. Alaska had only 47 murders – proving that people who think Democrats fail the “law and order” test may not be able to perform simple division.

New York City has 8.7 million people. That would mean your chances of being murdered by dangerous immigrant gang members, or anyone else, would be 1 in 30,104. Alaskans would have to take their chances at…1 in 15,557. Tennessee – about as red a state as you can find – had 498 murders, for a rate of 1 in 13,829. Alabama, even redder, had 607 murders, or 1 per 8,108. In other words, immigrants might not be the problem, nor the fact most cities are run by Democratic mayors.

Case in point: This weekend a customer at a Burger King in Memphis got mad when her order at the drive-thru window took too long. As Fox News explained, the irate woman stepped out of her car.

Burger King surveillance video showed the woman pull out a black handgun from her car, lean into the drive-thru window and open fire.

Luckily, none of the employees were hit and the workers took off running through a backdoor, police said.

This is not to be confused with the shooting in Orlando last August, also at a Burger King, also due to a customer’s anger over a delayed order, in which one employee was killed. Nor do we mean the murder of another young drive-thru worker at a McDonalds in Elko, Nevada last November. Nor do we mean the incident in Milwaukee that month, where an irate customer broke the drive-thru window on purpose – only to have an employee at the Golden Arches come outside, pull a gun, and pistol whip the customer. Or the incident in October where an employee at a McDonalds in Kansas City, Mo., ended a dispute with a drive-thru customer by shooting and nearly killing him.

For “variety,” you have the Oklahoma City customer who became upset when informed the McDonalds dine-in room was closed. She, too, “fired multiple shots,” according to police. That assault last May left three workers bleeding from various wounds, although none were life-threatening.

A contract worth $628 million – and zero doses delivered.

SINCE THE TOPIC is danger, it turns out Emergent, the company tasked with making America’s coronavirus vaccines, has botched the job. So far, their factory in Baltimore has produced 150 million doses of vaccine which is good. Emergent has also been accused of violating safety and sanitation protocols and 15 million doses had to be destroyed. Which is not good. So far, not a single dose produced has been deemed safe enough to ship.

Definitely not good.

Emergent’s auditors reported last July that errors made at the factory “are not investigated to determine root cause, or are not investigated adequately.” Even worse, “Investigations are terminated without sufficient cause.” Mold was discovered repeatedly in one laboratory. The company conducted “essentially no investigation” and all workers did was wipe down the wheels of one cart.

Since Team Trump awarded the company a contract worth $628 million you might have thought officials would have been more diligent.

And, of course, President Trump might have asked for regular updates to ensure Emergent was doing its job.

But he was too busy tweeting to care.
