January 8, 2019: A Border Wall - for Canada?

1/8/19: President Trump is scheduled to give a short speech tonight about why we need to build the Great Wall of Trump. To help make that case, his surrogates have been out talking all week.

Keep out the moose.

Wrong border, fool!

Pinocchio Sanders, for one, appeared on Fox News, Sunday morning. You know she was expecting it was going to be safe to spew a few platitudes and lies. Chris Wallace was hosting and asked her about a claim by Homeland Security Secretary Kristjen Nielsen, that more than 3,000 terrorist suspects had been stopped trying to cross into this country from Mexico in the last year.

Pinocchio was excited to have the chance to bamboozle the fools who watch Fox for news. “We know that roughly, nearly 4,000 known or suspected terrorists come into our country illegally,” she told Wallace, “and we know that our most vulnerable point of entry is at our southern border.” If Pinocchio were a parrot, squawking by rote, she’d have made as much sense. She was repeating a statement she made, unchallenged, on this same channel two days before, that there were, “nearly 4,000 known or suspected terrorists [emphasis added] that CPB [Customs and Border Protection] picked up that came across our southern border.”

Wallace immediately put her in her place. “Do you know where those 4,000 people come, where they’re captured? Airports,” he said.

Pinocchio was clearly rattled by his response. So, Pinocchio did what Pinocchio does. Sanders tried a different formulation of the same lie. “I’m saying that they come by air, by land and by sea,” she said. “I’m not disagreeing with you that they’re coming through airports.”

Well, then, what good will a wall do, viewers of even average intellect should have been asking themselves?

Meanwhile, various news agencies spent Monday trying to uncover the facts. Wallace was just one of the first. CBS cited statistics from the Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security. A total of 2,554 people on the F.B.I.’s terrorist screening list were stopped trying to enter the U.S. in fiscal year 2017. That’s the last year for which data is complete. A handful, 49, tried to enter by sea. A whopping 2,170 were stopped at airports. The other 335 were attempting to enter by land; but the State Department, CBS noted, “said in September it had no indication that any terrorists had tried entering the U.S. through Mexico.”

NBC had the audacity to delve even deeper into official reports. According to NBC, CPB found:

Overall, 41 people on the Terrorist Screening Database were encountered at the southern border from Oct. 1, 2017, to March 31, 2018, but 35 of them were U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents. Six were classified as non-U.S. persons.

On the northern border, CBP stopped 91 people listed in the database, including 41 who were not already citizens or permanent residents.

Good god, Fox News fans, wake up!

Your boy Trump wants to build his big, beautiful wall on the wrong border!!! We’ve got to be vigilant! Terrorists in moose costumes may be flooding across the northern border, while we look foolishly to the south.

White House aides say Trump will speak to the nation for about 7-8 minutes tonight. That gives him five minutes for bragging, two minutes for lying, and a minute to whine about “Fake News.”

WE LEARNED TODAY, that Natalia Veselnitskaya, the Russian lawyer who showed up for the secret meeting in Trump Tower during the 2016, has been charged with obstruction of justice in a separate case, involving money laundering.

And tax fraud. (Trump’s kind of woman.)

September 30, 2020: Trump Shatters Debate Norms - Also Claims He Won

9/30/20: What did I miss while driving south from Mt. Rainier, to Underwood, Wash., over the worst road I’ve ever been on?

“Stand down but stand by.”

ACCORDING TO MOST PUNDITS, the Trump-Biden debate was the worst presidential debate in history. Naturally, Trump insists he won. The debate commission is so appalled, they plan to change the rules and may include a mute button when a candidate interrupts the other during any future debates.

Naturally, Trump objects to changing the rules, unless he’s picking a Supreme Court judge. (See: 9/20/20.)

A writer for Time described the televised contest as “like nothing I’d ever seen or imagined” and said the president had “shattered” debate norms.

Asked about the disaster, moderator Chris Wallace said the president “bears the primary responsibility for what happened.” Speaking to colleague Bill Hemmer, Wallace cited a Fox News analysis, that Trump interrupted Biden 71 times, and Wallace 74. That would be 145 interruptions in 130 minutes.

Did I mention Trump thought he won? Well, there were those who agreed. Sean Hannity, for one. And the Proud Boys, for sure. Asked to denounce white supremacists during the debate, Trump couldn’t do it. He insisted the real threat in America is Antifa, then fumed, that the Proud Boys “should stand down but stand by.” You know. In case he lost the election.

Then: gunfire, maybe?

His former National Security Adviser, H.R. McMaster, said the president’s failure to condemn white supremacy was like blowing a wide open layup in basketball. Or, to use a sports metaphor of my own: It was as if Trump were cheering for the racists who tried to keep Jackie Robinson from playing for the Dodgers. You know. In 1947. When America was “great.”

Jackie Robinson rounds first base.

BLOGGER’S NOTE (1/20/21): On this last day of Trump’s tenure, I am editing my blog for clarity, and polishing punctuation. My joke about the Proud Boys, above, has turned out not to be a joke, as authorities begin arresting individuals responsible for the mayhem on January 6, 2021.

BLOGGER’S NOTE (6/27/21): Chris Wallace later tells students participating in a George Washington University webinar, that in his earpiece he could hear his director admonishing him to get the debate under control. “And I’m thinking, what does he expect me to do? Does he expect me to hit a trap door and have the president of the United States go down? You know, there’s not much you can do in that situation.”
