February 10-16, 2017: Trump Gets Japanese History Wrong - Also, Presidential History

2/10/17: Angry in the face of sustained mockery on Saturday Night Live, Trump tweets: “I hosted SNL when it was a good show, but it’s not a good show anymore.” The show is “unwatchable.” “Sad!”

SNL
scores its highest ratings in 20 years.

___

2/11/17: Trump meets with the Japanese Prime Minister but does not repeat campaign complaints about the Japanese stealing American jobs or mooching off us for defense. He does not suggest, as he did last March, that Japan could use some atomic bombs of its own. Since Trump remembers nothing from history, he may not realize Japan is the only country ever targeted for nuclear destruction.

The Japanese are opposed to nuclear weapons.

___

2/12/17: A federal appeals court unanimously strikes down the first travel ban. It seems none of the three judges can grasp what a “bad high school” student could (see: 2/8/18). They can’t even see how “beautifully” the ban is written.

Instead, they rule the ban is inherently discriminatory and therefore …um …um … unconstitutional.

___

2/13/17: Reporters credit Trump for avoiding “bombastic pronouncements on Twitter” for an entire day!

At the White House on this Monday, he greets Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and makes it through an entire meeting without insulting anyone. He’s acting “presidential” at last.

___

2/14/17: General Michael J. Flynn, Trump’s National Security Adviser, resigns after it is made clear (by the free press) that he lied to Vice President Pence about meeting with Russian agents.

Oddly enough, the president learned that Flynn had lied two weeks ago. He didn’t fire him till reporters started digging.

___

2/15/17: Anthony Puzder, Trump’s choice for Secretary of Labor, withdraws from consideration.

Mr. Puzder’s problems include employing an undocumented immigrant for years to work as a maid in his home.

___

2/16/17: The president touts his November victory at a press conference and complains how unfair CNN, The New York Times and other media outlets have been. “I guess it was the biggest Electoral College win since Ronald Reagan,” he says. The media might not be happy he won. “But a lot of people are happy about it.”

____________________

“I guess it was the biggest Electoral College win since Ronald Reagan.”

President Trump on his win; he’s wrong, of course.

____________________

A reporter points out that his claim is not true. You could, for example, go all the way back to 2012, when Obama won more electoral votes.

Mr. Trump says you can’t blame him for getting his facts wrong because that’s what he was  told.

*

WE COULD KICK the president when he’s already down, but, come on – does this guy know anything about U.S. history? He “piled up” 304 electoral votes. Obama had 332 in 2012. Trump was wrong five times: Obama had 365 in 2008. Bill Clinton had 370 in 1992 and 379 in 1996.

And George H.W. Bush had 426 in 1988.

George H. W. Bush did it too.

BLOGGER’S NOTE (July 6, 2020): Trump’s final vote is raised to 306, when the U.S. Supreme Court rules that two votes from “faithless electors” who had refused to sign his name to their ballots had to be added to his win.

The decision of the high court was unanimous. Electors must cast their votes for the person they have sworn to voters that they will.

May 8, 2018: Trump Withdraws from the Iran Nuclear Arms Deal

5/8/18: Trump withdraws from the Iran nuclear arms deal, which means he kept his campaign promise, albeit a stupid one. Australia, France, Germany, Great Britain and Japan, all U.S. allies, oppose the move. Turkey calls it “an unfortunate step. The European Union faults the move, citing the fact that almost everyone except Trump believes the deal was working. Iran has zero nukes today – the perfect number. “We fully trust the work, competence and autonomy of the International Atomic Energy Agency that has published 10 reports certifying that Iran has fully complied with its commitments,” an EU spokesman offers. China and Russia, which had agreed to the deal, make it clear they’re not interested in renegotiating.

Iran threatens to resume uranium enrichment. This they had ceased, according to IAEA inspectors.

Our allies are not pleased.

August 24, 2018: Secretary of State Mike Pompeo Cancels Trip to North Korea

8/24/18: Diplomacy is still a bitch – because diplomacy is always a bitch. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is forced to call off his trip to North Korea. This decision comes after President Trump realizes Kim Jong-un still has all his nuclear weapons and isn’t anxious to hand any over to the USA. China, Trump tweets – because all complex foreign policy issues can be settled via tweet – is not helping resolve the standoff.

Still, he adds, “I would like to send my warmest regards and respect to Chairman Kim. I look forward to seeing him soon.”

Trump ♥♥♥♥♥♥’s authoritarians.

December 7, 2019: Gen. Kelly Out at White House, Rex Tillerson Declared "Dumb as a Rock" by the President

12/7/18: Trump’s terrible, no good weekend/week/month/presidency continues to spiral downward.

First, the president announces that White House chief of staff General John Kelly is leaving; but everything at 1600 Pennsylvania is ducky. Then we learn Nick Ayers will be taking the job.

Then we learn Ayers won’t be taking the job.

Why not pick a Russian?

I would like to offer this helpful suggestion: Why not pick a Russian for the job and cut out the middlemen?

On the international front we have new reports that North Korea is expanding missile-launching bases located along the Chinese border, where it would be beyond dangerous for the U.S. to strike. The North Koreans also appear to be ramping up production of nuclear weapons and missiles.

Total number of nuclear weapons Kim Jong-un has relinquished since June, when Trump declared North Korea was no longer a nuclear threat:

0.

While we’re on the subject of rogue leaders, CNN acquires a transcript of the tape of the last minutes journalist Jamal Khashoggi spent on earth. According to the translation, Khashoggi can be heard gasping three times, “I can’t breathe,” as a Saudi hit team finishes him off.

Soon a bone saw is heard. A doctor wielding it tells other members of the team to use ear plugs or listen to music, as he is, if the sound of dismemberment troubles them. The head of the hit squad can be heard talking on the phone. Turkish authorities, who have passed the transcript on to reporters, claim intercepts prove the calls are going to a number at the Saudi royal palace. The other end of the conversation can’t be heard. The assassin tells his listener the “job is done.”

None of this bothers our president, or Jared, his son-in-law. Trump continues to insist there’s no direct link between the murder and the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia. Jared does a fluff interview with Sean Hannity. Hannity chooses not to ask about the Crown Prince and Jared never brings him up. According to Jared, U.S. intelligence agencies are still trying to figure out who murdered the journalist. It doesn’t much matter in the end. He and “Dad” are focused on other matters.

“We’re focused now on the broader region, which is figuring out how to hopefully bring a deal together between the Israelis and the Palestinians,” Jared says. Apparently, neither Jared, nor the president realize: Hey, we’re the United States! We could work on more than one foreign policy issue at a time.

Regardless, the foreign policy hits keep coming. Trump needs a new U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and pickings are slim. He looks at his nearly empty bench and sends in Heather Nauert to guard the goal. Because nothing says, “We intend to bolster America’s preeminent role on the world stage,” like elevating a former Fox News host to this crucial post.

In an interview with CBS, former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson reveals the secrets of Trump’s foreign policy “success.” On numerous occasions, he tells an interviewer, he had to tell Trump that what he wanted done on the international stage was:

A)    Illegal.

B)     A violation of some existing treaty.

C)    Both.

Tillerson proves less than complimentary in describing the president’s deal-making processes. It was difficult, he says,

to go to work for a man who is pretty undisciplined, doesn’t like to read, doesn’t read briefing reports, doesn’t like to get into the details of a lot of things. But rather just kind of says, “Look, this is what I believe and you can try to convince me otherwise,” but most of the time you’re not going to do that.

Trump responds with his usual maturity in a tweet rant: “Rex Tillerson didn’t have the mental capacity needed. He was dumb as a rock and I couldn’t get rid of him fast enough. He was lazy as hell.”

February 25, 2019: President Trump Discovers Diplomacy Is always a Bitch

2/25/19: President Trump heads for Vietnam this afternoon, in preparation for a second summit meeting with Kim Jong-un, the dictator of North Korea.

In an effort to get ready, he tweets twenty times in one day and then we find out, sought advice on dealing with North Korea from…

Oh, for f**k sakes…Russia!

____________________

“He’s got a great personality. He’s a funny guy, he’s very smart, he’s a great negotiator. He loves his people, not that I’m surprised by that.”

President Trump

____________________

If that isn’t bad enough, it can be easy to forget Trump’s earlier bluster; but we must remember. On January 2, 2017, the president-elect tweeted: “North Korea just stated that it is in the final stages of developing a nuclear weapon capable of reaching parts of the U.S. It won’t happen!”

So, he was going to keep us safe in our beds, from the moment he took over, because it wouldn’t happen!

In April 2017, Trump offered this assessment of the murderous North Korean dictator in an interview on CBS.

I can tell you this, and a lot of people don’t like when I say it, but he was a young man of 26 or 27 when he took over from his father, when his father died. He’s dealing with obviously very tough people. A lot of people, I’m sure, tried to take that power away, whether it was his uncle or anybody else. And he was able to do it. So obviously, he’s a pretty smart cookie.

It helps, of course, if you want to hold power, that you can use an anti-aircraft gun to murder your opponents.

Still, Trump is impressed. Kim is a “smart cookie.”

On June 30, 2017, Trump got it right when he responded to a question during a White House meeting with the leader of South Korea. “The North Korean dictatorship has no regard for the safety and security of its people or its neighbors and has no respect for human life [emphasis added, here and below],” he said.

The two sides proceeded to trade threats and the North fired off a series of missiles, with increasing success. It “wouldn’t happen.” Then it did. The North Koreans now had a missile which could strike the USA.

On August 8, during a televised meeting in the White House, Trump threatened nuclear war.

North Korea best not make any more threats to the United States. They will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen. He has been very threatening – beyond a normal statement – and as I said, they will be met with fire, fury and, frankly, power the likes of which the world has never seen before.

On September 19, Trump tagged Kim as “Rocket Man” during a speech to the United Nations. The North Korean regime was a “band of criminals.”

Right again.

If you want to be president, it’s going to be a bitch.

Three days later he complained during a rally that “‘Rocket Man’ should have been handled a long time ago.”

Okay: getting kind of whiny.

Someone should tell the president that diplomacy is always a bitch. It was a bitch for George W. Bush. It was a bitch for his father and Bill Clinton and Barack Obama and – hell, Harry Truman. If you want to be president, it’s going to be a bitch. The Trump administration did what it could, just like presidents and administrations have been doing the best they can to “solve” the Israeli-Palestinian problem since 1948. Under this president it took months for the U.S. to organize a new range of sanctions aimed at North Korea. Naturally, we went to the United Nations and our allies for help: the same as Obama when it came to dealing with Iran. China was pressured to curtail trade with Kim. As with Obama and Iran, sanctions worked imperfectly.

By February 2018, the president was expressing optimism. “We have imposed the heaviest sanctions ever imposed.”

(Redundancy is his forte.)

In May 2018, we learned that Trump and Kim would be holding a summit meeting in Singapore. It was on. It was off. It was on again. Finally, the two met for talks in June. Trump came away giddy with success! Speaking with Greta Van Susteren on June 12, he changed his tune on Kim:

“He’s got a great personality,” he told her. “He’s a funny guy, he’s very smart, he’s a great negotiator. He loves his people, not that I’m surprised by that. I think that we have the start of an amazing deal. We’re going to denuke North Korea.”

Van Susteren expressed doubt.

Trump continued: “I understand the past and, you know, nobody has to tell me, he’s a rough guy. He has to be a rough guy or he has been a rough person. He’s smart, loves his people, he loves his country. He wants a lot of good things and that’s why he’s doing this.”

This? What was “this?”

In Trump’s mind a few hours of pleasant talk had solved the crisis. On June 13 he felt the overpowering urge to tweet:

The North did indeed cease actual missile testing, a provocation without doubt. They blew up one testing site, which on paper looked good. Then satellite photography indicated they were building new launching sites near the border with China – where we’d be reluctant to strike.

That was bad.

By September 30, 2018, however, Trump was telling everyone that Kim was sending him beautiful letters and they had “fallen in love.” He claimed we had been on the verge of war with North Korea before he took over – said Obama told him so – but now he was fixing it all by himself. Kim did not surrender a single nuclear weapon, but for Trump fans that was of no concern.

Let’s recap and consider a few differences in how the story is being covered now. On State of the Union, a CNN Sunday morning show, host Jake Tapper asked Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to comment.

“Do you think North Korea remains a nuclear threat?” Tapper asked.

“Yes,” Pompeo replied.

“But the President said he doesn’t,” Tapper said.

“That’s not what he said...I know precisely what he said,” Pompeo said.

“He tweeted: ‘There is no longer a nuclear threat from North Korea,’” Tapper said.

“What he said was that the efforts that had been made in Singapore – this commitment that Chairman Kim made – have substantially taken down the risk to the American people. It’s the mission of the Secretary of State and the President of the United States to keep American people secure. We’re aiming to achieve that,” Pompeo said.

Again, all well and good. Diplomacy is always a bitch.

But on Fox News the story was presented with a different slant. On Fox, Pompeo could insist that the current administration was no longer “cowering” before the North Korean threat.

Okay, let’s be clear. North Korea still has all its nuclear weapons and in 25 months, with Trump in the Oval Office, Kim Jong-un hasn’t surrendered a single weapon, not even a BB gun.

In fact, our president now says he’s not in any rush to disarm the North. According to Fox News,

At a black-tie gathering of governors at the White House on Sunday evening, Trump said that he and Kim had “developed a very, very good relationship.”

“We see eye-to-eye, I believe, but you’ll be seeing it more and more over the next couple of days,” the president said. “I don’t want to rush anybody, I just don’t want testing. As long as there’s no testing, we’re happy.”

So it is, on Fox, that this is billed as tremendous progress. Trump is a genius on a world stage. If North Korea has nuclear weapons, but doesn’t flaunt them, we should re-elect Donald in 2020, and 2024, for good measure. When Fox reports, and you decide, they want you to decide that Obama was “cowering” when he couldn’t get the North to give up weapons – which it got when George W. Bush was in office. Plus, Obama was a terrible leader when he worked to impose harsh sanctions on Iran. And Obama was terrible when China, Russia and our key allies backed a deal which kept Iran from getting any nuclear weapons during the eight years he was in office, and that deal is still working today, even though Trump reneged on the U.S. part of the pact.

So, yes, on Fox, Trump is the best!

Diplomacy is always a bitch.

Outside newsrooms where pundits practice punditry – in the real world – diplomacy is always a bitch. If you’re a pundit, or a rival politician, you can see what Obama does and when it doesn’t work perfectly, or when it sometimes doesn’t work at all, you put forward your plan. You claim your plan would have worked perfectly if only the president had listened to you.

You can’t be proven wrong because your plan can never be put in place and tested and so you will always sound smart.

Trump isn’t doing any worse than previous presidents in addressing the North Korean threat. He might end up doing better if he has time. The problem is that when it comes to diplomacy, Putin, Kim, and Prince Mohammed bin Salman have found that they can play the president for a sap. All they need to do is pander to his ego. That means there’s a real risk Trump could be fooled again in Hanoi. Meanwhile, new satellite images indicate that “North Korea’s main nuclear reactor for making weapons-grade plutonium may be operating” right now.

And that’s with Donald J. Trump headed that way.

May 4, 2019: Trump Claims - "Deal will happen!"

5/4/19: Remember when “repeal and replace” was going to be easy? Remember when Mexico was going to pay for the wall? And remember when North Korea was “no longer a nuclear threat?” Those were blissful times. Delusional times, true, but the MAGA crowd cheered every ridiculous claim the president made.

Now, with his term of office half over, the Great Deal Maker has still not managed to convince the North Koreans to give up a single nuke. For some reason, that doesn’t bother Trump. On Saturday, the president brushed off news that the North had test-fired short-range missiles, tweeting to make his point:

Anything in this very interesting world is possible, but I believe that Kim Jong Un fully realizes the great economic potential of North Korea, & will do nothing to interfere or end it. He also knows that I am with him & does not want to break his promise to me. Deal will happen [emphasis added]!

Yes, anything in this “very interesting world” is possible. It is possible, likely, even, that Kim Jong-un has played Trump for a chump.

June 13, 2019: First Anniversary of President Trump's Greatest Imaginary Success

6/13/19: Today marks the anniversary of Donald J. Trump’s greatest imaginary success. One year ago, he returned from his first summit with Kim Jong-un and announced that he had done the impossible, the incredible, that he, the greatest president ever, had worked an imaginary miracle.

“Just landed,” he tweeted joyously, at 4:56 a.m. on June 13, 2018, “a long trip, but everybody can now feel much safer than the day I took office. There is no longer a Nuclear Threat from North Korea [emphasis added]. Meeting with Kim Jong Un was an interesting and very positive experience. North Korea has great potential for the future!”

Now, 365 days later, we count the nukes given up by the homicidal dictator of North Korea:

0.

Yep: North Korea still has all its weapons.

July 22, 2019: Trump Suggests Insane Plan to End War in Afghanistan

7/22/19: Reporters manage to question the president briefly before a closed-door meeting with Imran Khan, the Prime Minister of Pakistan. Trump assures them that if the Taliban won’t agree to a peace deal, he has a plan to end the war in Afghanistan in a week. This is surprising news, since the U.S. has been bogged down in Afghanistan since shortly after the 9/11 attacks.

____________________

“I just don’t want to kill 10 million people.”

President Trump

____________________

Trump is frustrated because the U.S. can’t declare victory and go home. That means he can’t take credit and brag. “If we wanted to fight a war in Afghanistan and win it, I would win that war in a week,” he tells the press. “I just don’t want to kill 10 million people. Does that make sense to you?”

Um…that should make sense to anyone.

Naturally, his remarks raise “concerns in national security circles, as the estimated death toll implied a threat of nuclear force.”

This marks the third time the President Who Cried Wolf has threatened nuclear holocaust. He once said he would unleash “fire and fury” on North Korea. He said he would “end” Iran. Now he was talking about obliterating a third of the Afghan population, people we were there to help.

“I have plans on Afghanistan that, if I wanted to win that war, Afghanistan would be wiped off the face of the earth [emphasis added]” he said, on second thought giving himself a bit more flexibility. “It would be over literally in 10 days. I don’t want to go that route.”

No sane individual would. Trump kind of wishes he could.

COUNTRIES TRUMP HAS CONSIDERED NUKING:

North Korea - you don't just nuke the bad guys. You nuke everyone.

Iran.

And now: Afghanistan.

August 1-2, 2019: Climate Change and Two Trump Friends

August 1, 2019: Scientists report that July beat out June 2016 for the hottest month, globally, on record.

___

8/2/19: Once again, through the miracle of Twitter, President Trump proves he’s a giant dick.

The relevant tweet:

The President of the United States, who says he wants a big, beautiful border wall to protect us all from murderers and rapists, thinks it’s funny that Rep. Elijah Cummings’ house was burglarized.

*

NOT ONLY is Trump a dick, he’s a sap. Fourteen months ago, he claimed North Korea was no longer a nuclear threat. So far, he has not convinced Kim Jong-un to give up a single nuke.

The Donald is 0-for-his presidency.

So, while North Korea continues to build its nuclear arsenal, and has started launching missiles again, Trump can only tweet his way out of the conundrum.

His tweets, slightly edited:

Kim Jong Un and North Korea tested 3 short range missiles over the last number of days. These missiles tests are not a violation of our signed Singapore agreement, nor was there discussion of short range missiles when we shook hands...[emphasis added, unless otherwise noted]

....Chairman Kim does not want to disappoint me with a violation of trust....

....Chairman Kim has a great and beautiful vision for his country, and only the United States, with me as President, can make that vision come true. He will do the right thing because…he does not want to disappoint his friend, President Trump!

His “friend?”

Trump should be learning what every president since William McKinley in 1898 has had to learn. Diplomacy on a world stage is a bitch. And it’s hard as hell to get foreign nations to do what we want.

Only Trump isn’t learning.

*

THE PRESIDENT suffers another blow to the orange ego, when it becomes clear that Rep. John Ratcliffe, his pick to be the next Director of National Intelligence, is not going to be the next DNI.

That means Ratcliffe, tapped on July 29 to head up one of the most sensitive posts in the U.S. government, didn’t make it a week before his nomination went down in flaming wreckage.

Naturally, the president blames Democrats and the “Fake News” crowd for derailing his fine pick. He tells reporters that news organizations have treated Ratcliffe “very harshly and very unfairly.”

The president goes on to say that Republicans in the U.S. Senate would have loved Ratcliffe if Democrats and the free press hadn’t been so cruel. He says he and Ratcliffe decided it wasn’t worth it to go through a confirmation hearing, even though “Moscow Mitch” and the GOP had 53 votes in the upper house and had previously proven willing to vote “yes” on a tomato plant if Trump sent up a nomination.

The real problem was Ratcliffe’s thin-to-nonexistent qualifications. First, reporters discovered that the poor dolt had claimed a leading role in prosecuting U.S. v. Holy Land Foundation, an important antiterrorism case. When ABC News checked no one involved remembered Ratcliffe. It didn’t help to find Ratcliffe had also claimed to have put all kinds of terrorists in jail. The “enemies of the people” (a.k.a. reporters) discovered that the only case he ever prosecuted involving a terrorist was an Iraq War veteran with PTSD.

Finally, Trump’s pick for DNI claimed he had “arrested 300 illegal aliens in a single day.” That claim was…how shall we say…fictitious.

Raids across several states, involving multiple jurisdictions, swept up undocumented workers in various poultry plants. All Ratcliffe did was “disarm” workers who were cutting up chickens.

Even “Moscow Mitch” and his crew knew the only reason Trump picked Ratcliffe for the job was that Ratcliffe tried to make Robert Mueller look bad during public testimony on July 24. (See: 7/24/19.)
