February 1, 2019: President Trump and His "Team of Vipers"

February 1, 2019: After two grueling months, trapped in the White House by his own obstinacy, due to a partial government shutdown which he ordered, the president heads to Mar-a-Lago for the weekend.

According to The New York Times, quoting one loyal Trump supporter, the president has been suffering.

“You would have to be insensitive not to be touched by how he has stayed there working,” said Toni Holt Kramer, the founder of Trumpettes USA, a booster group that is planning to welcome him. “I think people will have tears in their eyes because they’re so grateful that he’s come back to his home away from home.”

(See: 2/5/19.)

Yeah. John McCain? Imprisoned for more than five years, and tortured routinely. Not a hero.

Trump? He binged on TV and enjoyed room service whenever he wanted in the White House for…weeks.

*

A NEW BOOK, just out, and written by former White House aide Chris Sims, bears the title Team of Vipers.

The President of the United States hears about the book and labels Sims “a mess,” says he was nothing more than a “gofer,” and warns that his aide signed a non-disclosure agreement, typically used by businesses to keep critics silent. See for example: Sexual harassment, Fox News, Bill O’Reilly; sexual harassment, Fox News, Roger Ailes; porn star sex and payoffs, Citizen Donald J. Trump.

No previous president has ever tried to force staffers to sign non-disclosure agreements and it’s not clear they’d be legal.

You know. Because. History, and such.

“As far as I know, it’s never been tried in the White House,” Russell Riley, the co-chair of the Presidential Oral History Program at the University of Virginia’s Miller Center tells Time. “I’ve never heard of it. I’ve done oral histories back to the Jimmy Carter presidency.”

Other books that this president has tried to block include Unhinged: An Insider Account of the Trump White House and Fire and Fury: Inside the White House. Someone should explain to Trump fans why this is dangerous; but they’d probably ignore the warning and insist this is all “Fake News.”

Logic not being their strongest suit. (See: 2/22/19.)

As for Sims, he writes in part,

I suspect that posterity will look back on this bizarre time in history like we were living on the pages of a Dickens novel. Lincoln famously had his Team of Rivals. Trump had his Team of Vipers. We served. We fought. We brought our egos. We brought our personal agendas and vendettas. We were ruthless. And some of us, I assume, were good people.

Donald J. Trump. Team of Vipers.

It figures.

BLOGGER’S NOTE (10/29/21): When I check reviews much later, they prove interesting. Sims says near the end of his book, “I’m proud to have worked for the president of the United States. And in spite of the frustrations and misgivings laid out in this book, I’m proud that the president I served was Donald Trump.” He admits that he includes himself as one of the “vipers.” He tells a reporter for The New Yorker, “And I think a lot of what I saw in there came from a very selfish place, and one of the criticisms I have of myself is that I didn’t have a servant’s heart a lot of the time while I was there. And that’s a criticism I would apply to a lot of people there.”

Sims agrees that the culture of any workplace comes from the top down, but also says that he doesn’t think Trump has “a racist bone in his body,” while agreeing that the president’s comments often sound “racially insensitive.”

When the reviewer for The New Yorker presses him on what Sims thinks the meaning of “birtherism” was, he responds, “I don’t know.”

Prodded repeatedly to answer, Sims repeatedly says he doesn’t understand the point of the questions. Finally, he admits, “So I think that’s, like, a great example of a time where he does not step up to the plate and take on these race issues in an appropriate way, a helpful way for the country. No doubt that that was terrible. I don’t know what else you want me to say about it.”

Eventually, Sims admits that at times he was “a coward” and might have been wise to quit. And this was long before the Black Lives Matter days, when racially insensitive comments constantly spilled from President Trump’s lips.

Birtherism? Yeah. That, too, was racism of the worst sort.

March 11, 2019: Trump Supporters - Was There Ever a Group of More Gullible Americans?

3/11/19: Once again, we have proof that the president will lie about any topic, big, small, medium sized, or just for practice.

Last week, in a White House meeting, Trump inadvertently referred to Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, as “Tim Apple.”

Most of us make these kinds of verbal slips every day. Trump is incapable of owning any mistake. He first claimed that he said, “Tim Cook, Apple.” The “Cook” was so soft no one heard him, except Trump’s imaginary friend.

____________________

Donald J. Trump is incapable of telling the truth.

____________________

Then today he changed his story again, tweeting:

Not only is this idiotic, more than 100,000 Trump fans loved it.

The simple slip of the tongue shouldn’t matter. What does matter is that we learn again this is a man who can’t stop lying. Trump is the kind of guy who would deny chopping down a cherry tree even if you had him on tape, chips flying in all directions, as he wielded his little hatchet.

Was there ever a group of more gullible Americans?

Donald J. Trump is incapable of telling the truth. We need to keep that in mind when we consider his Big Lies. For years he promised he was going to prove that President Obama wasn’t born in America. Republicans believed what he said. Once Trump realized that lie was no longer resonating with the broader American public and was hurting his chances in 2016, he changed his stance. In a terse ten-word statement, he admitted the very least he could. “President Barack Obama was born in the United States, period,” was all he said.

He didn’t explain. He didn’t apologize for pushing the birther myth for five years. He took no follow up questions, insisting he wanted to “get back to making America strong and great again [emphasis added].”

This is the guy who whines about “Fake News” every day.

In truth, “Fake News” often comes directly from Trump’s Twitter feed to his fans, via a stream of noxious tweets.  He offers up colossal errors of fact, and even when those errors are revealed, he never corrects mistakes. Recently he tweeted the “shocking” news that Texas had found 95,000 non-citizens registered to vote. Trump noted that 58,000 had in fact voted!

It was a meat-and-potatoes kind of right-wing fairy tale and the president’s fans gobbled up every bite and clamored for seconds, then pleaded for thirds. More than 140,000 Twitter followers “liked” his tweet. It was retweeted 41,000 times and took on a secondary and tertiary life of its own.

Right-wing numbskulls, too lazy to read anything longer than 280-character tweets, were up in arms, ready to buy more guns, punch a few reporters, and “take America back.” The story of massive voter fraud spread like kudzu and couldn’t be stopped. Down in Texas, however, the tale was falling apart.

Notified by the State of Texas to start checking voter rolls, county officials in 254 counties set to work. It was immediately clear that the lists of 95,000 non-citizens registered to vote were so riddled with error as to be useless. We’ve already highlighted the results. (See: 1/31/19.)

So, let’s use the results for McClennan County to make the main point. When McClennan officials began checking the list from the state, they found that of 366 “non-citizens” in the county who were registered to vote… um…366 just so happened to be U.S. citizens.

The problem, of course, is that even when Trump lies big – and he often lies huge – his fans still fall for it. If there has ever been a group of more gullible Americans, I’m not sure who it might be.

Maybe people who fell for the story of the Cardiff Giant.

One believed to be the fossilized figure of an ancient man,

the Cardiff giant proved to be a hoax.

June 2, 2020: President Trump - A Twisted Talent for Stirring Anger and Fear

6/2/20: The deaths of 106,000 Americans from the coronavirus are bad enough. The toll on jobs, as our economy grinds to a halt, with more than 40 million Americans suddenly out of work, is bad enough.

Now, on top of that we see scores of American cities riven by angry protests and even rioting.

This president has no more moral authority than the cop who knelt on George Floyd’s neck until he was dead.

____________________

And who do we look to in vain for a calming voice in a time of growing fury? Donald Trump? This president has no more moral authority than the cop who knelt on George Floyd’s neck until he was dead.

Trump is what Trump is. He’s an adept hater. That makes him the wrong man, in the wrong job, at the wrong time. We all remember how he got a start in politics. His rise in the right-wing pantheon came on the strength of his birtherism. Racism with a new name. Trump claimed that Barack Obama wasn’t an American. He said he could prove it.

He never did.

More recently, he gave a birther radio personality, Rush Limbaugh, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

He employs a birther press secretary. Birthers stick together, like Klansmen and Klanswomen without sheets.

Trump is who he is, a profoundly warped human being. He can’t help to heal a nation because his superpower is creating division. During his run for the White House, Trump appealed to fans like the West Virginia woman who called Michelle Obama “an ape in heels.” He employed a campaign co-chair in New York who joked that Mrs. Obama should go back to Africa, “live in a cave,” and have sex with gorillas. Since entering politics Trump has managed to pluck the heartstrings of neo-Nazi luminaries like Richard Spencer, David Duke and Rocky Suhayda. It was Suhayda who pointed out that Trump’s 2016 victory represented “a real opportunity for people like white nationalists.”

Spencer and his audience cheered Trump's victory in 2016.

As a candidate, Trump said he might pay the legal fees for a white fan who sucker-punched a black protester, who was being led out of one of his rallies. Matthew Heimbach, an avowed white supremacist, assaulted an African American woman at another rally in March 2016. His lawyer later claimed that Heimbach could not be held to account, because his client had “acted pursuant to the directives and requests of Donald J. Trump and Donald J. Trump for President.” If his client was found liable, the attorney said, “any liability must be shifted to one or both of them.”

The man who sits in the White House gives haters cover to spew whatever they want. Trump gave the Holocaust denier, Arthur Jones, hope enough to run for Congress. He hired Carl Higbie, who joked about having people bring guns to the border and perform target practice on illegals. Higbie had previously suggested that black women think “breeding is a form of government employment.” Later, while visiting Great Britain, the president retweeted posts from Katie Hopkins. Hopkins, a racist with a British accent, once famously compared dark-skinned immigrants coming into Europe to “cockroaches.”

A twisted talent for stirring anger and fear, and fueling hatred.

Twisted individuals often band together. It’s no surprise to find that one of Trump’s top aides is Stephen Miller. Miller is a soulless chap who subscribes to the “Great Replacement” myth. That is: Dark people are plotting to replace the white race in Europe and America.

Miller was the warped genius behind the decision to lock up children in cages after they and their families tried to sneak across our border. Trump was in sympathy, all the way.

Trump’s skill set includes a twisted talent for stirring anger and fear, and fueling hatred. In the fall of 2016, the man who wished to be president fired up his base by attacking NFL players who knelt in peaceful protest against police brutality. After he was elected, he claimed that protesting players, predominantly African American, were disrespecting our military, and our flag, and should lose their jobs. He said that if they didn’t like it, they should leave this country. When Jemele Hill, an African American sportscaster, labeled him a racist, Trump said she should be fired. He called kneeling players like Colin Kaepernick, sons-of-bitches. And police kept kneeling on the necks of others.

Trump has had almost a full term to learn to unite rather than divide. He has regressed. Last summer he suggested that four female members of Congress, all individuals of color who had criticized his policies, should go back to countries where they came from if they didn’t like it here. One of the four, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, was born in the Bronx. Ayanna Pressley was born in Cincinnati. Pressley’s ancestors arrived in America, via slave ship, long before the first Trump set foot on free soil in 1885.

Now, with the nation torn by protest, we need a leader with empathy. The Great Divider is incapable. When he gazes in the mirror, he is looking at all the people he cares about most.

Trump has never governed with all of us in mind. His default setting is to appeal to the base instincts of his base. It’s them against the rest of us, and if he can stir anger against “treasonous” Democrats, “flag-hating” liberals, “Enemies of the People” in the press, and his dark-skinned predecessor, he’s not only ready to do so, he’s in his element.

If you care to look, the word “hate” litters the president’s Twitter feed, like bodies in the wake of a pogrom. The Democrats “hate” our military, he says. His critics “hate” our country. His political opponents “hate” the Second Amendment. Trump hates anyone who criticizes or doubts him and works hard to get his base to hate them, too.

Trump might claim to care about George Floyd. He doesn’t. He won’t care no matter how many African Americans are killed by police, because most would never vote for him. The police, in general, will. Trump might tweet a hundred times a day. He won’t tweet sympathy for Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old ER-tech, shot eight times by police. And shot by mistake. Or Botham Jean, shot and killed by mistake, while in his apartment. Or Greg Gunn, shot in the back by a police officer, while Gunn was walking home after a card game. Or Sean Reed, a 21-year-old veteran, shot while live-streaming the incident on Facebook, so that you could hear the cops laughing over his corpse. He’s going to need a “closed casket” funeral, one joked. You won’t hear the Great Divider speak with feeling about Ahmaud Arbery, the black jogger, gunned down by neighbors (watch the video), at any of his rallies. Because many who attend those rallies love their AR-15’s more than they love their darker neighbors.

If you were to ask President Trump, after three-and-a-half years in office, who these people are Frederick Douglass, Trayvon Martin, or Eric Garner (who died because he was selling cigarettes illegally; more video) he wouldn’t know. He wouldn’t know about Philando Castile (watch even more video if you’d like to see another senseless killing), Jordan Davis, William Green, Tamir Rice (killed at age 12, while wielding a toy pistol), Atatiana Jefferson (shot and killed by police in her own home) or Heather Heyer, a young white woman (run down and killed in 2017, by a white supremacist at the “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Va.).

Trump has continued to stoke the anger as cities he is supposed to care about have exploded. When protesters gathered outside the White House on a night in May, Trump boasted that if they had breached the main fence, they would have been met with “vicious dogs” and the “most ominous weapons” he had ever seen.

He intimated that his critics – in this case protesters – were fake. Their anger was a hoax. Trump was one of many right-wing nuts who gave credence to the idea that survivors of the Parkland High School massacre were “crisis actors,” not kids justly shocked by the carnage they had endured. Now the president said the crowd at the White House gate was “professionally organized,” not comprised of Americans expressing outrage and dismay. He commended the Secret Service in a series of tweets, saying agents “let the ‘protesters’ scream & rant as much as they wanted, but whenever someone....got too frisky or out of line, they would quickly come down on them, hard didn’t know what hit them.”

George Floyd never knew what hit him either. But for Trump, the simpler the message, the better it is when it comes to riling up his base.

REPORTERS have a chance to ask Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada what he thinks of Trump’s threat to use the military to stamp out protests. For 21 long seconds he pauses, a pause freighted with meaning.

“We all watch in horror and consternation what’s going on in the United States,” he finally says.

“There couldn’t be a scarier person inhabiting the White House.”

Even Canada’s leading conservative newspapers are concerned with what’s happening to the south. “There couldn’t be a scarier person inhabiting the White House at this very moment,” Gary Mason, a writer for The Globe and Mail says.

“My view is one of profound sadness sadness at watching communities we respect being so torn apart, and sadness at watching the loss of life in the pandemic,” Frank McKenna, former Canadian ambassador to the United States, adds. “The United States is so polarized, the question of wearing a mask or not is fraught with political overtones. It’s excruciating to watch.”

August 13, 2020: More Birtherism from the Birther in the White House

8/13/20: We know Vice President Pence and his boss are consistently baffled by basic math. Yesterday, Mr. Pence annulled (see: 8/12/20) the rules of addition and subtraction while bragging about all the jobs Team Trump has created.

Meanwhile, his boss was telling anyone who would listen that the country was doing great, and the coronavirus was almost disappearing.

Geography also tends to confuse the president. Which means, he was out with his latest “birther” conspiracy. Someone in the know, Trump explained during a press conference, was saying that Democratic vice presidential nominee Kamala Harris, was not eligible to run for that high office.

De ja vu!

She wasn’t an American citizen!

____________________

“Under the Constitution and Supreme Court precedent, she is unequivocally an American citizen.”

Sen. Lindsey Graham

A reporter asked Trump about the story, put forward in an op-ed piece in Newsweek. The president replied:

So I just heard that, I heard it today, that she doesn’t meet the requirements....I have no idea if that’s right, I would have assumed the Democrats would have checked that out before she gets chosen to run for vice president. But that’s very serious, they’re saying that she wasn’t qualified because she wasn’t born in this country [emphasis added].

Got it? “Very serious.”

Even though, “I have no idea if that’s right.”

It was easy enough to check the story – and you might think some of his aides would – but they were busy trying to spread the story, themselves. Harris was born in…California …in 1964.

Trump’s latest birther ploy was too stupid even for stalwart sycophants to swallow. Sen. Lindsey Graham, a prolific kisser of presidential booty, was clear. There “is no issue as to whether or not she is an American citizen. She was born in the United States in 1964 to parents who were legally present. Under the Constitution and Supreme Court precedent, she is unequivocally an American citizen.”

Trump’s defenders will say it’s a mere coincidence that the two people he said weren’t American enough to serve in our highest offices (first, Obama, now Harris) just happened to have dark skin.

White House aide and pale white guy, Jared Kushner (qualified to comment on all matters related to government, by virtue of marriage to Trump daughter Ivanka), said, no, no, no! Trump was not being racist! The president “just said that he had no idea whether that’s right or wrong,” Kushner told a reporter. “I don’t see that as promoting it. But look, at the end of the day, that’s something that’s out there. ... I personally have no reason to believe she’s not.”

Yes. We see. It’s “out there.” No idea whether that’s right or not. Who knows! Personally, Jared has “no reason to believe she’s not” a citizen. But maybe we had better get a look at her birth certificate.

*

FINALLY, since we’re talking about Trump and his latest birther tricks, we should highlight the work of one reporter.

During a White House press conference Thursday, S.V. Dáte, a reporter for HuffPost, put a question to the president.

As might be expected, Donald J. Trump had no good answer:

*

MEANWHILE, Dr. Robert Redfield warns that unless Americans take greater precautions, we may be in for the “worst fall” ever, with coronavirus rampant.

On August 13, another 1,120 Americans die from the disease.
