March 17, 2019: Judge Jeanine on Fox Dials Up the Hate

3/17/19: Since our topic of late is hate, let’s focus on Judge Jeanine Pirro. The Judge gets yanked from the air after attacking Rep. Ilhan Omar on religious grounds. Omar has been critical of Israeli policies in the Middle East. Pirro decides to focus on what Omar wears, and by extension cast doubt on the loyalty of all Muslim-American women.

Think about it: Omar wears a hijab,” Pirro points out, “which according to the Quran, 33:59, tells women to cover so they won’t get molested. Is her adherence to this Islamic doctrine indicative of her adherence to Sharia law, which in itself is antithetical to the United States Constitution?”

I’m not going to bother quoting any religious books, but direct right-wing haters to Article VI of the U.S. Constitution.

It reads in part:

The [U.S.] Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the members of the several state legislatures, and all executive and judicial officers, both of the United States and of the several states, shall be bound by oath or affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.

That means a Muslim-American woman can wear a hijab if she likes and still serve in Congress if elected.

(I wonder if Amish women, with their conservative clothing, scare Pirro?)

*

NATURALLY, President Trump throws his support behind Pirro, ignores the fact she has denigrated all Muslim-American women – that is, citizens Trump has sworn to protect and defend – and in backing up Pirro’s right to attack religious freedom, attacks the free press again.

“Bring back @JudgeJeanine Pirro,” he tweets. “The Radical Left Democrats, working closely with their beloved partner, the Fake News Media, is using every trick in the book to SILENCE a majority of our Country. They have all out campaigns against @FoxNews hosts who are doing too well.”

At no time since he was elected, by a minority of voters, has Trump had the majority of Americans on his side.

April 8, 2019: Trump Peddles Hate and People Listen - GOP Healthcare Plan Still Missing

4/8/19: The dickishness of Donald J. Trump knows no bounds. Speaking to the Republican Jewish Coalition over the weekend, he goes out of his way to bash Rep. Ilhan Omar, who has been faulted for tone-deaf remarks about Israel. Or, as Republicans see it: “anti-Semitic” comments.

We’ll put that issue aside and focus on the dick. “Special thanks to Representative Omar of Minnesota,” Trump tells his audience in mocking fashion. “Oh, I forgot. She doesn’t like Israel. I forgot. I’m so sorry.”

See what a comedian he is.

This comes a day after Patrick W. Carlineo Jr., 55, of Addison, New York, was charged with making a threatening call to Rep. Omar’s office. In that call he asked a staffer, “Do you work for the Muslim Brotherhood? Why are you working for her, she’s a (expletive) terrorist. I’ll put a bullet in her (expletive) skull.”

According to Fox News, “Carlineo told the FBI that he is a patriot, ‘loves the president and that he hates radical Muslims in our government,’ according to a criminal complaint.”

Of course, he loves the president. (See: 4/2/19, and how Trump has mastered the art of spreading hate.)

Rep. Omar.

“Conversations with colleagues.”

IN TERMS OF TRUMP’S PLAN to replace Obamacare, we’re finally getting somewhere, which in this case is nowhere.

Trump has been telling everyone that he has a group of four GOP senators working on a great new plan. Sadly, Sen. Rick Scott told reporters that any plan would have to come from the White House. Sen. Mitt Romney said only that he and his colleagues were “working on health care thoughts.” Sen. John Barrasso had nothing substantive to offer but did suggest that Democrats wanted a “complete government takeover of health care,” which is technically just bitching about the other side, not actually planning. That left only Sen. Bill Cassidy to talk about the new plan, which he said boiled down to “conversations with colleagues.”

Yeah.

The GOP has got nothing.

POSTSCRIPT: Congress today approved a seven-state agreement to reduce use of water from the Colorado River. Populations in Arizona and other states that agreed to the deal are growing. Drought has spread at the same time. So something had to be done before spigots ran dry.

Meanwhile, Republican lawmakers continue to ignore or deny the dangers of climate change, rail against energy-saving lightbulbs, and complain vociferously about reduced-flush toilets.

Who, after all, can forget Sen. Rand Paul’s impassioned defense of old-fashioned toilets, because, he insisted, low-flush toilets didn’t work?

That, my fellow Americans, is the Republican approach to all environmental issues, reduced to a nutso nutshell. There’s a kind of, “You can pry my cold, dead hand off the toilet lever” vibe at work. For Sen. James Inhofe, it’s the “look, I made a snowball,” approach. Or, in the case of President Trump, a “save the hairspray” focus. It’s pathetic, really. And our children and grandchildren and their children and grandchildren will all live to realize it was a huge mistake.

Forty million Americans rely on the Colorado River for water; and key reservoirs like Lake Mead have fallen below 40 percent capacity.

BLOGGER’S NOTE (8/12/20): The Department of Energy decides to address the “big issues,” sixteen months later, easing rules implemented in 1992, regarding shower heads. Those rules limited water pressure to 2.5 gallons per minute.

Since Trump’s every thought centers on himself, as president he began complaining that he couldn’t wash his “beautiful hair” effectively anymore. “So what do you do? You just stand there longer or you take a shower longer? Because my hair - I don’t know about you, but it has to be perfect.”

Drought in the West? Not a problem. That awful coif. Yeah. Fix it with more water.

We can also look back fondly on the day the president claimed low-flush toilets didn’t work and he had to keep banging on the lever, ten times, even fifteen, like a pigeon in a lab experiment pecking at a lever to get more food. You had to ask yourself: What was the man putting in his toilet? (See: 12/7/19.)

BLOGGER’S NOTE #2 (5/15/22): The story of shrinking water supplies grows more worrisome yearly. In August 2021, Lake Mead had dropped to 35% of capacity, and the decline only continued. By May 2022, water levels had fallen 150 feet, and an intake valve that supplied water to 2.2 million people living in Southern Nevada was now above the water line.

September 18, 2019: A Potato Has as Much Compassion as the President of the United States

9/18/19: At this point it should be clear to all Americans: the president has the emotional range of a potato.

This week, we have fresh evidence of Trump’s lack of compassion. During a flight on Air Force One, reporters ask him to comment on the death of Cokie Roberts, renowned ABC reporter. Roberts died this week from complications from breast surgery. She was 75. This was the perfect time for Trump to mention Trump. “I never met her,” he said. Then, he couldn’t help himself. “She never treated me nicely,” he added.

Yes, Ms. Roberts was dead; but the tragedy was how much Trump’s ego had been hurt.

Trump and potatoes - not much difference.

TODAY, the president had a second chance to get human emotion right. He blew it again. Trump was traveling in California, supposedly having taken an interest in the state’s problem with homelessness.

Would he suggest ways the federal government could help? Would he focus on mental illness and other reasons most homeless people end up living on America’s streets? Surely, a president who touts love for what he refers to as “my military,” would address the need to help homeless veterans. They make up a large percentage of those who sleep in doorways, shelter under bridges, and live in tattered tents, where they recline on the seats of busted up cars.

Then again, this is Trump. Here’s how he’s quoted in Fox News (although Fox News is not inclined to parse his words):

We have people living in our…best highways, our best streets, our best entrances to buildings...where people in those buildings pay tremendous taxes, where they went to those locations because of the prestige.

In many cases, they came from other countries and they moved to Los Angeles or they moved to San Francisco because of the prestige of the city, and all of a sudden they have tents. Hundreds and hundreds of tents and people living at the entrance to their office building. And they want to leave. And the people of San Francisco are fed up, and the people of Los Angeles are fed up.

Oh, god, those poor rich people – even those poor rich people who immigrated to the United States – they came for the prestige. And they have suffered, what with less prestige than hoped. Also, tripping over those human wrecks on the sidewalks in front of their high-rent homes.

And, oh, those ugly tents, where people with mental illnesses live, and where veterans with PTSD hunker down and don’t shower for a month. Oh, the smell. How the suffering folks who pay high taxes stand it, walking right by, god only knows! Right there, too! Right on our “best streets.”

If only the homeless would go live in some crummy neighborhood, with the rest of the poor! Out of sight.

Out of mind.

POSTSCRIPT: President Twitter Thumbs posts a link on his account showing Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Muslim-American woman, dancing and celebrating on the eighteenth anniversary of 9/11.

“The new face of the Democratic Party,” he warns.

Once again, the “Fake News” is being put out there by Twitter Thumbs himself. The clip Trump linked to his account shows Omar dancing at a celebration on September 13. Adam Green, co-founder of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, hosted a celebration for Omar and other Democratic lawmakers that evening, and posted the clip of the dancing that night.

October 18, 2020: President Trump Declares "Character Counts Week."

10/18/20: President Trump announced that Sunday would mark the start of “Character Counts Week.”

Really.

This is not a parody.

If you’re an elementary school teacher, you can find ideas online to celebrate the “Six Pillars of Character.” You can do readings related to character too. For example: Is There Really a Human Race? You can look up what the pillars are, and discuss one each day in class.

As a middle school or high school teacher, perhaps you could ask students to write an essay, “How Does President Trump Exemplify the Six Pillars of Character?” I think that might be fun.

“Inspiring and incentivizing and inciting…domestic terrorism.”

One person who might argue that the president has zero pillars of character, would be Gov. Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan. Having heard Trump stir a crowd on Saturday to lock her up, she was rightly upset. “It’s incredibly disturbing,” she said on Meet the Press Sunday, “that the president of the United States, ten days after a plot to kidnap, put me on trial and execute me ten days after that was uncovered the president is at it again and inspiring and incentivizing and inciting this kind of domestic terrorism.”

If you follow the news closely, you might understand why Whitmer was spooked. In a separate but similar incident, Meredith Dowty, a retired firefighter in Wichita, Kansas, heard the president’s siren song.

Dowty is alleged to have hatched a plan to fight “masks and tyranny” by kidnapping Mayor Brandon Whipple.

Having seen some of the threatening messages Dowty allegedly sent, the mayor summed up his foe’s plan: “He said he was going to kidnap me and slash my throat and he needed my address because I needed to see the hangman me and everyone who…” Whipple trailed off.

“Something about tyranny.”

POSTSCRIPT: Mr. Trump had a busy weekend campaigning and burnishing his fascist cred. On Friday, he told a Florida crowd that Rep. Ilhan Omar, another nemesis, had entered the country illegally at age 12, as a refugee. In an effort to stir the hate, he attacked her Muslim faith, saying with zero proof that she “married her brother or something.”

At a rally in Wisconsin he brought her up again. He beamed, like Mussolini, when the crowd began chanting, “Lock her up! Lock her up!”

Call me old-fashioned, I guess. Before we lock anyone up, I would prefer we observe all the protections guaranteed in the Bill of Rights, regarding safeguards for the accused. (See: Amendments IV, VI, VII, VIII and XIV.)
