June 26, 2017: Trumpcare - Primum Non Nocere

6/26/17: The American Medical Association joins a long list of organizations condemning Trumpcare.

“The draft legislation violates that standard on many levels.”

American Medical Association

In a letter to Senator Mitch McConnell, the head of the AMA warns, “Medicine has long operated under the precept of Primum non nocere, or ‘first, do no harm.’ The draft legislation violates that standard on many levels.”

A list of groups opposed:

The American Hospital Association, which represents 5,000 hospitals

The American Association of Medical Colleges

The American College of Physicians

The American Academy of Family Physicians, which warns that the plan would do “great harm to patients”

The American Academy of Pediatrics which states flatly: “The bill fails children by dismantling the Medicaid program, capping its funding, ending its expansion and allowing its benefits to be scaled back.”

Just for fun, these groups also denounce Trumpcare:

The National Association of Medicaid Directors

The American Psychiatric Association

The Federation of American Hospitals

America’s Essential Hospitals, which warns: “Senate leaders…have put ideology ahead of lives with a plan that puts health and home at risk for millions of working Americans.”

The American Heart Association, which says the bill is “literally heartless”

The American Lung Association

The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse, which warns: Anyone who votes for this bill “cannot claim to be committed to ending the opioid epidemic.”

The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network

AARP, which advocates for 38 million Americans over the age of 50

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Ironically, the Koch brothers, Charles and David, don’t think the Senate bill goes far enough to reduce access to healthcare.

Can you really expect those poor gentlemen – worth more than $40 billion each – to pay higher taxes?

July 18, 2017: Another Russian Jumping on the White House Bed!

7/18/17: The nine lives of the Republican healthcare bill are still being squandered. Once again, a GOP plan dies in the Senate when four Republican senators announce they won’t vote to allow debate on the merits.

Trump promised 68 times to repeal and replace Obamacare.

The bill is that bad.

Some insist this marks the end of a seven-year-long run, during which Republicans voted dozens of times to “repeal and replace” Obamacare. And need we remind anyone that “repeal and replace” is what Candidate Trump promised to do 68 times while running for office?

He would kill Obamacare on Day One.

He would make “repeal and replace” look like child’s play (assuming the child had no pre-existing conditions). Tweeting in February 2016, Trump promised: “We will immediately repeal and replace ObamaCare – and nobody can do that like me. We will save $’s and have much better healthcare!”

With Republican majorities in House and Senate and rules changes to make it possible to pass the “carefully crafted” plan by a 51-vote margin, Trump manages to accomplish … nothing.

*

WELL, THEN, how’s the “witch hunt” going? How many people with ties to the Russian government were in the meeting with Don Jr. Okay, not one, not two, but three! Even Fox News can’t ignore the story. It turns out the eighth participant in the meeting which Donald Jr. completely forgot about was a Russian-American, Ike Kaveladze, an expert on adoption and babies!

Hahaha. No.

Kaveladze works for the Russian oligarch Aras Agalarov, a man worth $1.96 billion and known for close ties with President Trump, a man worth $3.5 billion, and Vladimir Putin, who has spent his time in office wisely, saving his rubles. One source estimates Putin may have a secret stash of $200 billion.

Anyway, according to a
story in Newsweek, Kaveladze was investigated in 2000, when he was:

…found by investigators with the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) to have helped move more than $1.4 billion on behalf of a large number of Russian and Eastern European clients through accounts with Citibank in New York and Commercial Bank in San Francisco.

Technically, his actions turned out to be legal. But investigators found he filed papers to open 2,000 shell corporations and U.S. bank accounts in Delaware, “all on behalf of Russian operators that were used to launder offshore cash coming into the United States.”

As you can see no sensible person would imagine Kaveladze went to the meeting with Jr. for any other reason except to talk about babies.

Everyone in the meeting forgot the meeting ever occurred.

July 19-20, 2017: President Trump "Out of His Legislative Depth"

7/19/17: The GOP healthcare plan looks deader than Davy Crockett at the Alamo. Fingers are pointing in all directions. Even Republicans see the president “as so out of his legislative depth as to be a liability.”

No matter. Trump demands that Congress remain in Washington and keep working till a really great plan can be hammered out and slapped on his desk, ready for his weirdly huge signature. Forget August recess! Stick around D.C. and do the job the people elected you to do.

Where, exactly was the president the previous weekend, during a critical stage in the fight for Trumpcare? He was “busy” watching an LPGA tournament at his course in Bedminster, New Jersey.

___

7/20/17: “Made in America” week continues. You might not have noticed because the “Fake News” folks keep uncovering evidence that Russians had been lurking in every nook and cranny of the Trump 2016 campaign.

On Monday, the president is let loose on the White House grounds to play with various machines and products from all fifty states. You could, for instance, watch him pat the wheel of a giant Caterpillar earth mover. This seems ironic, since Caterpillar has long been
willing to outsource jobs to places like Mexico.

Companies like Ford, GM, GE, and Proctor & Gamble gleefully ship jobs to Mexico and other faraway lands, too.

Is the problem too much regulation? Is the problem greedy union workers who won’t allow companies to cut costs? Perhaps top executives could take a pay cut and save a few more jobs.

Consider compensation for top Caterpillar executives in 2016:

Speaking of greed, investigators are reportedly studying records related to Trump’s finances at Deutsche Bank. No evidence of wrongdoing has yet been uncovered. Still, Deutsche does have a lengthy rap sheet. The bank once paid a $630 million fine for helping Russian criminal interests launder an estimated $10 billion. This came on top of Deutsche getting socked for a $7.2 billion fine for peddling toxic mortgages and a $2.5 billion fine for manipulating worldwide interest rates.

See! Who would ever think it’s a good idea to regulate Big Business! These guys are the best!!!!!!!!!!

July 28-30, 2017: Trumpcare is Still Dead; North Korea Can Hit the West Coast

7/28/17: GOP Senators stay up way past Mitch McConnell’s bedtime to put the finishing touches on their latest Trumpcare plan. The “replace” part of “repeal and replace” is finally ready. John McCain has made a special trip back from Arizona, following an operation for a cancerous tumor behind his left eye.

Trump himself has called him – finally – a hero.

At 1:24 a.m. McCain strides across the well of the Senate. His vote is called by the clerk – and McCain turns one thumb down.

“No,” he says.

Trumpcare is still dead. And Trump is back to hating the hero.

*

NORTH KOREA caps a truly terrible day when it launches another long-range missile, this one capable of hitting the West Coast of the United States. Clearly, there are no good choices, moving forward.

Trump blames previous administrations for leaving him to deal with a mess. With this guy, the buck never stops on his desk.

The buck stops in the past.

___

7/29/17: The planet is burning. North Korean missiles threaten the continental United States. The Tweeter-in-Chief responds in a powerful Twitter rampage. Ten times he taps away furiously. At 6:07 a.m. he begins his day with another complaint about the Russian “witch hunt.”

Trump also insists that the Senate must go to a 51-vote rule on everything so the GOP can pass any legislation it wants. He doesn’t like the 60-vote rule required to pass various bills in the upper house.

At 6:39 a.m., he’s riled and ready to get down to running the country exactly the way he wants. The Republicans have a 52-48 margin in the Senate. So do the math, people! He complains: “....8 Dems totally control the U.S. Senate. Many great Republican bills will never pass, like Kate’s Law (see: 6/25/17) and complete Healthcare. Get smart!”

Later, Trump complains about “our foolish past leaders” because they couldn’t get China to help rein in North Korea. At 6:35 p.m. he brings a long tweeting day to an end, admitting his disappointment with China: “...they do NOTHING for us with North Korea, just talk. We will no longer allow this to continue.”

___

7/30/17: The steamy bromance between Putin and Trump, making headlines as recently as July 7, reaches a sad denouement. In the face of new congressional sanctions, Putin expels 755 American diplomats.

December 26, 2017: Trump Declares Obamacare Dead!

12/26/17: Once again, Trump announces the demise of Obamacare. The sad end comes at 6:58 on a December morning.

“Based on the fact that the very unfair and unpopular Individual Mandate has been terminated as part of our Tax Cut Bill,” Trump tweets, “which essentially Repeals (over time) ObamaCare, the Democrats & Republicans will eventually come together and develop a great new HealthCare plan!”

He has made similar claims many times before. A sampling may suffice.

January 13, 2020: President Trump Talks Healthcare - Meaning He Lies

1/13/20: The president is having more than his usual trouble in keeping his lies straight this week. His latest fabrications seem almost desperate, and we have fresh evidence that Mr. Trump will say anything, no matter how outrageous, if he thinks he can trick Americans into belief.

Today, healthcare is the topic. We know that the Trump administration is advancing a lawsuit, Texas v. Azar, through the courts. That lawsuit, if Trump should prevail, will (as even Fox News admitted last March) lead to a “total overturn of Obamacare.” It would be the end of the first law ever passed to ensure that individuals with pre-existing conditions cannot be discriminated against by health insurers. According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, as many as 129 million Americans might be affected.

Says President Trump: These may KILL you!

The problem for President Trump is that he wants to be re-elected in the worst way, even more than he wants to boink another Playboy Bunny. If the courts strike down the law before the 2020 election, his chances for a second term in the White House will likely evaporate.

Kansas, a deep red state, for example, just became the 37th to adopt Obamacare. Kansans who have insurance for the first time might not be pleased if it was snatched away before November.

States which have adopted Obamacare.

Even many of Senate Leader McConnell’s constituents might rise up and vote him out of office. After Kentucky adopted Obamacare, the number of uninsured Kentuckians fell from 616,000 to 223,000.

So? What to do?

Ah! The Trump administration has decided to ask the U.S. Supreme Court to delay hearing the case until after the election. That way MAGA folks who have healthcare can vote for Trump and McConnell and then lose that coverage in 2021. They’ll still have those red hats, though.

That meant, today, Trump was reduced to some truly ballsy lying. In a pair of tweets, he insisted up was down, and he was the real protector of Americans with pre-existing conditions:

[Democratic presidential candidate] Mini Mike Bloomberg is spending a lot of money on False Advertising. I was the person who saved Pre-Existing Conditions in your Healthcare, you have it now, while at the same time winning the fight to rid you of the expensive, unfair and very unpopular Individual Mandate.....

....and, if Republicans win in court and take back the House of Represenatives, your healthcare, that I have now brought to the best place in many years, will become the best ever, by far. I will always protect your Pre-Existing Conditions, the Dems will not!

The Associated Press immediately fact-checked Trump and – no surprise – said that he was being dishonest.

*

IN OTHER HEALTHCARE NEWS, the mortality rate for all cancers in the U.S. dropped 2.2% from 2016 to 2017 (the latest year for which we have complete figures). It was the biggest one-year drop in history. And, if you know how Trump operates, you know what’s coming next.

Bragging.

Dr. Don immediately hogged credit. “U.S. Cancer Death Rate Lowest In Recorded History!” he tweeted.

“A lot of good news coming out of this Administration.”

I don’t believe the cancer rate fell because of Trump. But if he insists on claiming credit for everything good, he should also take the blame since the CDC noted that life expectancy dropped in the U.S. in 2017. Also: the fact that suicide rates rose that year to the highest rate since World War II.

In fact, here’s how Trump lowered cancer rates. Lung cancer has been declining for decades because fewer people smoke, a decline Trump started way back in 1965. Thanks to him, only 14% of adults smoked in 2017, compared with 42.5% half a century ago. Second, more Americans are getting early diagnoses and preventative care. Thanks to President Trump, Obamacare was implemented in 2010, and twenty million Americans gained insurance and could get X-rays and checkups to make sure they were, and remained, cancer-free.

Also: Obamacare protected people with pre-existing conditions, all thanks to…Doctor Donald J. Trump.

Cancer rates have been declining because Dr. Donald is the best! In 2011 the Food and Drug Administration approved new therapies for the treatment of melanoma. The mortality rate from skin cancer began to fall, 7% per annually. Trump did that!!!! Starting in 2015, advances in immunotherapy, including use of patients’ own T-cells to fight tumors, led to drops in mortality.

TRUMPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP!

You don’t even need healthcare at this point. Doctor Donald will remove your cancerous brain tumor himself. The mortality rate will drop to zero. Coming next: Trump will raise the dead.

POSTSCRIPT: I think all Americans can agree that helpful warnings about cancer risks, issued by Doctor Donald, have also alerted citizens to danger and helped us adjust our behaviors as required.

Doctor Donald started fighting cancer, via Twitter, in October 2012, with a pair of life-saving tweets:

“Big cancer risk from new ‘environmental’ light bulbs – a big price to pay!” he warned on October 2.

He followed up two weeks later with this: “Remember, new ‘environment friendly’ lightbulbs can cause cancer. Be careful – the idiots who came up with this stuff don’t care.”

September 15, 2020: Trump Blows the Town Hall Meeting

9/15/20: President Trump shows up for a town hall meeting in Pennsylvania, where the audience will be composed of undecided voters. It’s hosted by ABC News and moderated by George Stephanopoulos.

You can tell it didn’t go well, because as soon as it ends, apologists claim the Big Orange Buffoon was “ambushed.” That is: Unlike the creampuff questions he gets when he shows up on Fox News, he was forced to try thinking.

Even easy questions gave the Buffoon fits. For example, Stephanopoulos wondered if the president thought he could have done anything better in battling the spread of the coronavirus.

“I don’t think so,” he replied.

Strike one.

Was it true, he was asked, that he had down-played the threat of COVID-19? You know, like saying it was no more dangerous than ordinary flu – and maybe powdered flower petals would protect us from the virus?

No, he actually “up-played it,” Trump insisted.

Strike two.

What about his repeated claims that the disease would just go away, like some miracle?

Trump claimed he was right all along. “Sure, over a period of time,” he said. “Sure with time it goes away.”

Apparently, the Big Orange Buffoon is thinking in terms of eons.

Strike three.

Carl Day, an African American pastor in Philadelphia, and one of the undecided voters in attendance, had a question about making America great again. “When,” he wondered, “has America been great for African Americans in the ghetto of America? Are you aware of how tone deaf, that comes off to [the] African American community?”

The tone deaf president responded with a tone deaf flourish.

“Well, I can say this: We have tremendous African American support,” he replied. Black people were killing it before the pandemic hit, he claimed. He insisted that the pre-coronavirus period “was the best single moment in the history of the African American people in this country.”

Asked by another questioner if he felt there was racial injustice in America, Trump did admit that the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Jacob Blake were “tragic events.” Then he said the real problem was that citizens didn’t show police respect. “I will say this: If you’re going to stop crime, we have to give ... the respect back to the police that they deserve. We have to give them their mojo. We have to let them protect us.”

So! More mojo!

If cops had more mojo, they wouldn’t have to kneel on George Floyd’s neck, or break into Breonna Taylor’s apartment and shoot her dead by mistake. If they had their mojo, maybe they would have shot Blake less times in the back.

Seven. That’s a lot.

Even this liberal blogger would admit the job of law enforcement must, inherently, be hard. Trump only cares because he wants the police unions to support his campaign. So, he slathers it on thick. “Police are so afraid today that they do something slightly wrong, slightly wrong and their pension’s gone, their job’s gone, who knows what happens. Their life is ruined, their wife or their husband will leave, the whole thing, it’s a very scary thing,” Trump told the audience.

Then again, Floyd and Taylor are dead; and Blake may be permanently paralyzed from the waist down.

Trump blamed nearly every problem facing the nation on Democrats. He couldn’t get a second stimulus package passed because House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was mean, and his party only controlled the Senate, and he was only the president, and he didn’t feel like compromising.

(Later, Trump called on Republicans in the Senate to increase the stimulus bailout by roughly three-quarters of a trillion dollars, something similar to what Democrats have been demanding all along.)

Crime in the cities? Trump used to blame President Obama for crime in the cities – because Obama was president!

He should do something!

Now, Trump said the problem was “Democratic mayors.” Trump said he had kept his 2016 campaign promise to “restore law and order.” Except for those pesky cities.

This blogger has mentioned this before: but eight of the top ten states for most violent crimes per person are … Republican-controlled states.

One audience member asked Trump why he didn’t wear a mask more often and why he didn’t order a national mask mandate.

Nu  uh, Trump objected. He did, too, wear a mask. Like at hospitals and stuff. Maybe even on Halloween. Besides, it was the Democrats! “They said at the Democrat Convention … they’re going to do a national mandate. They never did it,” Trump said. “Because they’re checked out, they never did it.”

Probably because no one in the Democratic Party, including Joe Biden, has power to issue a national mandate, not even magic powers, such as invisibility and being able to levitate by chanting, “Shazam.”

If anything, Trump’s performance got worse. He claimed, “A lot of people think the masks are not good.”

Stephanopoulos interjected, “Who are those people?”

“Waiters,” the Buffoon said.

Trump was asked a series of questions related to healthcare. If you were keeping track, he’d be striking out for about the ninth time in a row. It would be like he was facing Tom Seaver over and over.

I’ll just cheat here and let ABC News describe what happened when one questioner offered a tough one:

In a powerful and passionate exchange about her lifelong health struggles, Ellesia Blaque, an assistant professor from Philadelphia, politely yet bluntly, asked the president to “please stop” interrupting her.

“Let me finish my question, sir,” Blaque said, as she described a life of overcoming the odds, battling an inflammatory disease called sarcoidosis that deemed her “uninsurable” from the day she was born, but still going on to get a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree and a PhD.

Blaque vouched for the importance of Obamacare, which allowed for people with preexisting conditions to qualify for health care at the same rate as everyone else.

“Within a 36 to 72 hour period, without my medication, I will be dead. And I want to know what it is that you’re going to do to assure that people like me, who work hard, we do everything we’re supposed to do, can stay insured? It’s not my fault that I was born with this disease,” Blaque said.

Trump missed the pitch so badly, that if this were real baseball, you would have felt sorry for the bum, because you’d know he’d be getting demoted to the lowest levels of the minor leagues the next day.

“It’s a total disaster,” Trump said, referring to Obamacare. And then he said he’d have a much better plan ready soon.

Kind of the healthcare equivalent of: “Mexico will pay for the wall.” On Day #1,334 of his presidency, Trump had still not revealed his great new healthcare plan. Still, he wanted Basque to know that “repeal and replace” would be so easy. Maybe in his second term.

Maybe in his third.

*

YOU KNEW, if you failed to watch the debacle, that Trump’ performance was terrible. On Fox News, Laura Ingraham, was furious. True. She’s always furious. But now she was furious about how the Big Orange Buffoon had been mistreated at the town hall meeting. The Democratic National Committee “may have put the whole thing on” she alibied for the president. The moderator was a “Clintonite.” How dared he ask Trump follow up questions! “The president loves mixing it up with everybody,” Ingraham fumed. “He did the interview with Jonathan Swan, the 18 tapes of Bob Woodward – now he did this. But this is an ambush.”

Allow me to interject. If you’ve never seen Trump’s interview with Jonathan Swan, it was even more of a fiasco than his town hall failure.

During the Swan interview, the president used graphs

that looked like a third-grader made them.

As for those Woodward tapes, you know Trump wishes he could have destroyed them before they played. And don’t forget. He agreed to speak to the journalist. He even called him late at night, just to chat.

John McLaughlin, Trump’s favorite pollster (because he always says Trump is going to win), was a guest on Ms. Ingraham’s show. He claimed the president “was very sensitive and demonstrated empathy” during the town hall session. He mentioned the moving story of the woman who told of having just lost her mother. McLaughlin, astute observers noted, did not mention that the woman’s mother died from cancer.

Whereas the president repeatedly referred to the woman’s mother dying of “COVID” in response to her question.

POSTSCRIPT: Trump also had a busy day tweeting. At one point, with Iran threatening revenge for the killing of Gen. Qasem Soleimani, Trump tried to channel his inner Clint Eastwood.

“Any attack by Iran, in any form, against the United States will be met with an attack on Iran that will be 1,000 times greater in magnitude!" he said.

Have we mentioned? The President of the United States really likes making simplistic statements on Twitter.
