December 17-18, 2017: Scientists Ordered Not to Cite...Science

12/17/17: The Thought Police are hard at work at the Centers for Disease Control. Today we learn scientists at CDC were admonished not to use these seven words or phrases in written reports: “science-based,” “evidence-based,” “transgender,” “fetus,” “diversity” “vulnerable,” or “entitlement.” Scientists will no longer blather on about “science-based” findings.

Here's a NASA video on climate change.

(Updated to include 2021.)

Wow, hot enough today for you, buddy?

In Trumpistan changing the wording passes for draining the swamp. You rebrand the swamp a “swimming pool.”

The Thought Police have already “drained the swamp” at the E.P.A., at NASA, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration by scrubbing all mention of climate change.

Now, government scientists may only ask in conversation or for publication, “Wow, hot enough today for you, buddy?”

___

12/18/17: The Thought Police expand their efforts regarding the E.P.A. Scott Pruitt gives approval to hire Definers Public Affairs to provide “media monitoring.” Definers, which won a no-bid contract, just so happens to be affiliated with America Rising, a Republican research group.

America Rising spent a good chunk of 2016 submitting Freedom of Information requests demanding the emails of various E.P.A. employees who had the nerve to:

A)    Speak up at a private lunch and say the nation might be headed for an “environmental catastrophe.”

B)     Write a letter to Pruitt, raising similar concerns.

C)    Attend a rally to protest budget cuts, which would very possibly cripple the agency.

May 17, 2018: "Witch Hunts" and Weather - The President Has No Clue

5/17/18: Donald Trump rises early and sets out to do what he does best. First, he turns on TV and watches Fox & Friends. Then he tweets and whines. At 6:28 a.m. he offers this nugget: “Congratulations America, we are now into the second year of the greatest Witch Hunt in American History.”

Sadly, we learn later in the day that another witch has pled guilty. This time the pointy hat ends up on the head of Jeffrey Yohai, Paul Manafort’s former business partner and ex-husband of Manafort’s daughter. Yohai now joins five other witches who have pled guilty and agreed to cooperate. A seventh witch is cooperating but has not yet been charged.

“I fully believe and know that the climate is changing. I also know that we human beings are contributing to it in a major way.”

Jim Bridenstine, Trump choice to head up NASA

____________________

TRUMP’S PICK to head up NASA admits what pretty much every scientist at NASA already knows.

Former Oklahoma congressman and man-with-no-science background, Jim Bridenstine, tells staff in his first meeting: “I don’t deny the consensus that the climate is changing, in fact I fully believe and know that the climate is changing. I also know that we human beings are contributing to it in a major way.”

That’s right, he said: “major way.”

“Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas,” Bridenstine informs gathered scientists, who have known this for decades. “We are putting it into the atmosphere in volumes that we haven’t seen and that greenhouse gas is warming the planet. That is absolutely happening and we are responsible for it.”

If you watch too much right-wing news, you’ve never heard of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme (AMAP) and don’t know the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) exists. All are sounding dire warning. The WMO announced that records for 2016 show CO2 in the atmosphere at its highest levels in 800,000 years. AMAP has been equally clear. If current trends continue Arctic sea ice may disappear within 20 years. NSIDC is blunt. An ominous trend involves loss of “old ice,” defined as ice five-years-old or older. In 1984 old ice covered 61% of the Arctic Ocean. Recent measurements say this cover has declined to 34%. Such ice ranges from 9.8 to 13.1 feet thick.

Melting Greenland ice would pose a huge problem.

Melting sea ice does not raise sea levels. Melting ice in Greenland does. Here again, trend lines are bleak. At Cape Morris Jessup, far to the north, hourly temperatures rarely surpass 32° Fahrenheit. It happened once in 1997. It happened five times in 2011, seven in 2017 and 59 times in 2018.

Melting Greenland ice would pose a huge problem around the world; and it is starting to melt. According to another assortment of experts, ice in Greenland is melting at a rate not seen in centuries. You can read all about it in everyone’s favorite magazine, Geophysical Research Letters.

Or you can watch Fox News and get dumber by the hour.

In summary, we must once again label President Trump a “science moron.” This is a man, after all, who doesn’t believe in exercise because he thinks the body has a finite amount of energy. If you use some up there’s less left for golfing, tweeting, and signing hush money checks. Explaining science to Trump is like trying to explain the Virgin Birth to a Golden Retriever.

In fact, let’s try a simple test to illustrate the point. Is the following Trump tweet about weather or climate:

December 2013: Ice storm rolls from Texas to Tennessee – I’m in Los Angeles and it’s freezing. Global warming is a total, and very expensive, hoax!

Um…that would be weather.

January 2014: NBC News just called it the great freeze - coldest weather in years. Is our country still spending money on the GLOBAL WARMING HOAX?

Again: weather.

February 2014: Massive record setting snowstorm and freezing temperatures in U.S. Smart that GLOBAL WARMING hoaxsters changed name to CLIMATE CHANGE! $$$$

Stupid focus on terminology; still…weather.

July 2014: Record cold temperatures in July - 20 to 30 degrees colder than normal. What the hell happened to GLOBAL WARMING?

That would be weather.

July 2015: It’s late in July and it is really cold outside in New York. Where the hell is GLOBAL WARMING??? We need some fast! It’s now CLIMATE CHANGE.

Still stupid!

October 2015: It’s really cold outside, they are calling it a major freeze, weeks ahead of normal. Man, we could use a big fat dose of global warming.

Can someone get this man a jacket? It’s still weather, you dolt.

December 28, 2017: In the East, it could be the COLDEST New Year’s Eve on record. Perhaps we could use a little bit of that good old Global Warming that our Country, but not other countries, was going to pay TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS to protect against. Bundle up!

Yes, weather.

Here’s climate change – or global warming – either one. NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) agree that 2017 was the second or third hottest year, globally, on record. Using NOAA rankings for simplicity, the hottest years on record are:

August 20, 2020: QAnon and the Quest to Save the Anchovies

8/20/20: You probably missed the story, but scientists announced that the Greenland ice sheet lost 532 billion metric tons of ice in 2019. That was more than twice as much as has been lost in an average year, since 2003, when NASA satellites began taking precise. measurements.

Alex Gardner, a NASA ice scientist, called the loss “huge” and “astounding.”

____________________

Tin Pot Don and QAnon save the anchovies.

____________________

This is a warning to the world; but Donald Trump isn’t listening. Or, he is, and doesn’t care.

His solution is to open up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for more drilling, because in Trumpistan, the more coal, oil and gas we burn, the better Tin Pot Don likes it. All respect to coal miners, worried about jobs. All respect to drillers in Texas and fracking crews in Ohio. We all want a good wage or to profit from a good business, be it opening up new oil fields, or building windmill farms in Iowa.

But we all live on the same globe; and the globe we live on must remain livable for future generations.

Another problem with dirty energy is oil spills – which could ruin the environment in the ANWR.

Look no further than Mauritania, where a Japanese ship has run aground, spilling oil into pristine waters.

IF IT SEEMS to you that paranoia has a foothold in the Oval Office, you are not in error. With Trump’s poll numbers looking dismal, and with sensible conservatives and longtime members of the GOP coming out against him, Trump is focused on holding his base. That includes a depressing swath of racist and nuts.

Wednesday, reporters asked the president about his growing support for people who believe in QAnon. If you’ve never heard of this movement because you’re not a crackpot, adherents believe the world is controlled by a “Deep State” cabal of satanic pedophiles. And go figure: They’re liberals! Members of this cabal are said to sexually torture children and harvest their adrenochrome. According to QAnon, this substance can have hallucinogenic effects at high doses. It’s also “a life-extending elixir.” Cannibalism is practiced and various forms of “mind control” are involved. Hollywood elites are behind the mind control portion of the scheme.

Jews, of course, play an outsize role, an idea your garden variety anti-Semite is happy to get behind. George Soros is supposedly the money man backing the child-molesting crew. Barack Obama was a leader of the nefarious ring, and Hillary Clinton too. In 2016 rumors circulated about a child sex slave ring, operating out of the basement of a Washington D.C. pizza joint. This lead one well-armed fool to barge in on people tossing dough and spreading sauce. He shot the lock off a freezer, and freed … zero children. Because there were none. All he rescued were a few anchovies – and for his troubles he got his dumb ass sent to prison.

The FBI has labeled QAnon a domestic terrorist threat.

Still, a growing number of people calling themselves Republicans and running for office believe in the mysterious “Q.”  He or she, or they, is/are the anonymous, online voice/s out to reveal the truth. Thus “Q anonymous.” Trump has congratulated several of these men and women on election day wins. When Marjorie Taylor Greene triumphed in a congressional primary in Georgia, Trump tweeted congratulations to a “future Republican Star.” He called her “strong on everything,” which is kind of vague –  but no doubt includes her stand against Hollywood mind control in all its permutations. He said Greene, an avid QAnon fan, was the type who “never gives up – a real WINNER!”

All this talk led reporters to inquire Wednesday, whether or not the president believed this bunkum. Was he helping save children – and the world – from Satanists, cannibals, and pedophiles?

Trump played coy. “I don’t know much about the movement other than I understand that they like me very much, which I appreciate,” he said. (Neo-Nazis and Klan members like him, too; but that’s a story for another day.)

“I’ve heard these are people that love our country.”

Then it was off to the races, with Tin Pot Don whipping the same nag he loves to ride. “I have heard that it [QAnon] is gaining in popularity, and from what I hear, these are people that when they watch the streets of Portland, when they watch what happened in New York City,” Trump explained, “these are people that don’t like seeing what’s going on.”

“I’ve heard these are people that love our country and they just don’t like seeing it.” The protests, he meant. “So I don’t know really anything about it other than they do supposedly like me and they also would like to see problems in these areas, like especially the areas that we’re talking about, go away.”

A reporter spelled out some of the group’s beliefs and waited for the President of the United States to comment.

“I haven’t heard that,” he shrugged. “But is that supposed to be a bad thing or good thing? If I can help save the world from problems, I’m willing to do it. I’m willing to put myself out there.”

The crooks were already here.

ONE FORMER TRUMP AIDE may not have a chance to help him with the saving or the winning of a second term.

It was announced this morning that Steve Bannon, once a valued campaign advisor, White House aide, and proud member of Trump’s National Security Council, has been indicted for fraud.

Bannon and several co-defendants allegedly funneled at least a million dollars from a fund called “Build the Wall” into their own pockets.

The irony, of course, is thick. Bannon was a leading voice in the “law and order” movement, a key to the Trump 2016 run for the White House. People who donated to the fund thought their dollars would go to help build Trump’s big, beautiful border wall, to keep out all the rapists and murderers and MS-13 gang members, crossing from Mexico. Now, it seems, the crooks were already here, using people’s contributions to pay for their own lavish lifestyles.

Asked about Bannon’s arrest, the president called it “a sad day.”

*

Can Vlad come out and play?

IT WAS A SAD DAY, too, for Alexei Navalny. U.S. News & World Report reports: “Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, a leading critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, was rushed to a hospital and was in a coma…due to what his spokeswoman said was a deliberate poisoning.”

Fingers immediately pointed at Putin, who has long history of bumping off any persistent critic.

Unfortunately, Trump cares as much about poisoned critics as he does the Greenland ice sheet. (See: 8/27/20.) He’s hoping to invite Putin to the next G-7 meeting, scheduled to be held in this country, but currently postponed due to the pandemic. The G-7 used to be the G-8 until the Russians invaded Crimea and started shooting up Ukraine.

Trump doesn’t care about Ukraine, or corruption in Ukraine either, no matter what he says.

At least four of the other six members of the G-7, all close allies of the United States, oppose an invite to the murderous autocrat. Those four: France, Canada, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

Donald still ♥’s Vlad.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST, White House Press Secretary “Birther” McEnany is asked if her boss is prepared to accept the results of the coming election.

“The president has always said he’ll see what happens,” she explains, “and make a determination in the aftermath. It’s the same thing he said last November [last election, she means]. He wants a free election, a fair election, and he wants confidence in the results of the election.”

In other words, he will be confident in the results if he wins. And you know, if he could pull a Putin, he would.

POSTSCRIPT: The president might believe that QAnon types love America, if not quite all the people who inhabit America, such as Jews, Muslims, immigrants, and people of dark skin. Several Republican voices, however, are raised in protest.

“Real leaders call conspiracy theories conspiracy theories.”

Rep. Liz Cheney describes the QAnon movement as a “dangerous lunacy that should have no place in American politics.”

Rep. Adam Kinzinger sums up the secretive musings of “Q” this way, tweeting: “Could be Russian propaganda or a basement dweller. Regardless, no place in Congress for these conspiracies.”

Sen. Ben Sasse slams Trump, without naming the fool. “QAnon is nuts,” he tweets, “and real leaders call conspiracy theories conspiracy theories.”

Gov. Jeb Bush tweets, derisively, “Why in the world would the President not kick Q’anon supporters’ butts? Nut jobs, rascists [sic], haters have no place in either Party.”

Vice President Pence, the most loyal ass-kisser ever to hold the second highest office in the land, is put on the spot Friday and asked, does he believe in a secret cabal of cannibals and pedophiles, who happen to be Democrats, working against his boss and hoping to destroy America?

Pence does his very best to change the subject before finally admitting, “I dismiss it out of hand.”

Even Sen. Lindsey Graham weighs in. “Well,” he tells an interviewer, “QAnon is batshit crazy. Crazy stuff. Inspiring people to violence. I think it is a platform that plays off people’s fears, that compels them to do things they normally wouldn’t do. And it’s very much a threat.”

BLOGGER’S NOTE:  Navalny survives the poisoning attempt, barely. He does, however, keep a sense of humor.

He pokes fun at Putin again, noting that in Russian history: “There was Alexander the Liberator and Yaroslav the Wise. Now we have Vladimir the Poisoner of Underpants.”

Sadly, this is still Putin we’re talking about. In February 2021 Navalny is sent to a Russian penal camp in Siberia.

Trump wants to invite Putin to come to the G-7 meeting.

January 17, 2021: A Rotten Seed that Took Root in the Republican Party

1/17/21: Having had several days to ponder the sad state of the Republican Party, Sen. Ben Sasse offers harsh assessment of what went wrong on January 6.

____________________

“It is the blossoming of a rotten seed that took root in the Republican Party.”

Sen. Ben Sasse

____________________

The violence that Americans witnessed – and that might recur in the coming days – is not a protest gone awry or the work of “a few bad apples.” It is the blossoming of a rotten seed that took root in the Republican Party some time ago and has been nourished by treachery, poor political judgment, and cowardice.

When Trump leaves office, my party faces a choice: We can dedicate ourselves to defending the Constitution and perpetuating our best American institutions and traditions, or we can be a party of conspiracy theories, cable-news fantasies, and the ruin that comes with them. We can be the party of Eisenhower, or the party of the conspiracist Alex Jones. We can applaud officer [Eugene] Goodman or side with the mob he outwitted. We cannot do both.

The conservative swaths of this media landscape were primed for Trump’s “Stop the steal” lie, which lit the fuse for the January 6 riot. For nine weeks, the president consistently lied that he had “won in a landslide.” Despite the fact that his lawyers and allies were laughed out of court more than 60 times, he spread one conspiracy theory after another across television, radio, and the web. For anyone who wanted to hear that Trump won, a machine of grifters was turning clicks into cash by telling their audiences what they wanted to hear. The liars got rich, their marks got angry, and things got out of control.

And that, dear America, is a nearly pitch-perfect assessment of what went wrong on Capitol Hill, and whom we should blame.

*

“Any reasonable person could see the potential for violence.”

GOOD REPUBLICANS, and we should remember there are many, continue to come to grips with what has happened under Trump’s rule. Former GOP Congressman Evan McMullin tweets:

Rand Paul warns that if Senate Republicans convict Trump, a third of the party will break off. So be it. The GOP faces an inescapable choice between a future of extremism, treachery and losses, or of truth, principle and leadership. Both paths are difficult, but only one is good.

Rep. Tom Rice, one of ten House Republicans to vote to impeach the president releases a statement explaining his vote.

Under the strict definition of the law, I don’t know if the President’s speech last Wednesday morning amounted to incitement of a riot, but any reasonable person could see the potential for violence.

Once the violence began, when the Capitol was under siege, when the Capitol Police were being beaten and killed, and when the Vice President and the Congress were being locked down, the President was watching and tweeted about the Vice President’s lack of courage.

For hours while the riot continued, the President communicated only on Twitter and offered only weak requests for restraint.

…It is only by the grace of God and the blood of the Capitol Police that the death toll was not much, much higher.

It has been a week since so many were injured, the United States Capitol was ransacked, and six people were killed, including two police officers. Yet, the President has not addressed the nation to ask for calm. He has not visited the injured and grieving. He has not offered condolences. Yesterday in a press briefing at the border, he said his comments were “perfectly appropriate.”

I have backed this President through thick and thin for four years. I campaigned for him and voted for him twice. But, this utter failure is inexcusable.

Sen. Sasse later adds to his criticism of those who have been playing with matches and flamethrowers. Writing in The Atlantic, he warns: “Until last week, many party leaders and consultants thought they could preach the Constitution while winking at QAnon. They can’t. The GOP must reject conspiracy theories or be consumed by them. Now is the time to decide what this party is about.”

In case anyone missed the point, he singled out newly-elected GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, poster child for QAnon folly, and offered succinct assessment. Greene, he warned, is “cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs.”

“If the GOP is to have a future outside the fever dreams of internet trolls,” the senator adds, “we have to call out falsehoods and conspiracy theories unequivocally. We have to repudiate people who peddle those lies.”

Doug Leone, a billionaire backer of President Trump renounces his support in the wake of the Jan. 6 riot. “After last week’s horrific events, President Trump lost many of his supporters, including me,” he explains. “The actions of the President and other rally speakers were responsible for inciting the rioters. We need to find the best way to move forward as a country, get behind our newly-elected President, and start working on the many difficult issues facing America.”

He and his wife Patti had donated $700,000 to the president’s reelection. Money they’d clearly like back.

*

WE REALIZE THAT PRESIDENT TRUMP is about to leave office the same way he came in: as the most ill-informed dope ever to take up residence at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. While he was busy howling about a stolen election that there was no proof was stolen, NASA used plenty of evidence to report that 2020 was, by the slimmest of margins, the hottest year, globally, ever.

That’s NASA laying out the facts.

February 23, 2021: U.S. Supreme Court Rules Trump Must Show His Taxes

2/23/21: The U.S. Supreme Court rules that Congress may indeed sneak a peek at Loser Don’s taxes.

Did the president pay taxes to support the government he led?

“That’s fascism, not justice - and that is exactly what they are trying to do with respect to me, except that the people of our Country won’t stand for it.”

Loser Don

____________________

Rejected-President Trump reacts as only he can. In an email statement so nutty, we provide it (annotated) in full below, he howls:

This investigation is a continuation of the greatest political Witch Hunt in the history of our Country, whether it was the never ending $32 million Mueller hoax, which already investigated everything that could possibly be investigated, “Russia Russia Russia,” where there was a finding of “No Collusion,” or two ridiculous “Crazy Nancy” inspired impeachment attempts where I was found NOT GUILTY. It just never ends!

At least a dozen members of the Trump 2016 campaign were convicted of lying about contacts with Russians. They include Paul Manafort and Roger Stone, both of whom Trump for some reason pardoned. Don Jr. also met with Russians, then “forgot” the meeting for over a year, until the free press broke the story.

So now, for more than two years, New York City has been looking at almost every transaction I’ve ever done, including seeking tax returns which were done by among the biggest and most prestigious law and accounting firms in the U.S. The Tea Party was treated far better by the IRS than Donald Trump. The Supreme Court never should have let this “fishing expedition” happen, but they did. This is something which has never happened to a President before, it is all Democrat-inspired in a totally Democrat location, New York City and State, completely controlled and dominated by a heavily reported enemy of mine, Governor Andrew Cuomo. These are attacks by Democrats willing to do anything to stop the almost 75 million people (the most votes, by far, ever gotten by a sitting president) who voted for me in the election – an election which many people, and experts, feel that I won. I agree!

The U.S. Supreme Court is not controlled by Democrats; so Trump should quit complaining. And he already lucked out once, after being named an “unindicted co-conspirator” in the same case that sent his personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, to prison.

Plus, any numbskull should be able to figure out that if Trump is cheating on his taxes, that doesn’t have anything to do with stopping all the people who voted for him in the last election. They got to vote.

That ship has sailed.

The new phenomenon of “headhunting” prosecutors and AGs – who try to take down their political opponents using the law as a weapon – is a threat to the very foundation of our liberty. That’s what is done in third world countries. Even worse are those who run for prosecutorial or attorney general offices in far-left states and jurisdictions pledging to take out a political opponent. That’s fascism, not justice – and that is exactly what they are trying to do with respect to me, except that the people of our Country won’t stand for it.

Really? The guy whose rallies consistently featured chants of, “Lock her up!” and “Lock him up!” is going to complain about headhunting prosecutors?

In the meantime, murders and violent crime are up in New York City by record numbers, and nothing is done about it. Our elected officials don’t care. All they focus on is the persecution of President Donald J. Trump.

I will fight on, just as I have, for the last five years (even before I was successfully elected), despite all of the election crimes that were committed against me. We will win!

I think we can assume that on his tombstone, someday, Trump will include the line, “I won the 2020 election by millions of votes.”

He lost because turnout across the country was high, and because Joe Biden got 81.3 million votes, which is more than the 74.2 million Trump received. (Trump can’t even get the number of votes he received right.)

*

RIGHT-WING media types are so desperate for ways to disparage the new president that they have been forced to insult one of the Biden family’s dogs. Greg Kelly, a host on Newsmax, decided that Champ, a 12-year-old German Shepard, looked dirty, and uncared for, and “like a junkyard dog.”

Biden’s dog is terrible! His marriage sucks!

He didn’t mention the Biden’s other dog, Major, the first rescue animal ever to live in the White House. He wanted viewers to believe Joe and Jill Biden were neglectful owners and probably deserved to be impeached.

Since Newsmax beat him to the puppy punch, Tucker Carlson realized he would have to go even lower to make a point – that Joe Biden was a terrible president and a loathsome human being – and focus on the Biden’s 44-year-long marriage. Apparently, Tuck was bummed because the media couldn’t “get enough of Joe & Jill’s love story,” as the banner headline for his show read.

Scoffing at the idea of a loving couple in the White House, he explained: “The Bidens’ affection is totally real. It’s in no way part of a slick PR campaign devised by cynical consultants determined to hide the president’s senility by misdirection,” Carlson claimed cynically. With a smirk on his face (pretty much one of only two expressions that ever register on Carlson’s smarmy mug), he added, “No, not at all. Their love is as real as climate change.”

Ha, douchebag! Both NASA and NOAA believe that climate change is real. So, Tuck, once again you prove you are an idiot; and watching your show makes viewers dumber every night.

As NASA’s own website clearly says, “Scientific evidence for warming of the climate is unequivocal.”

And the probability is 95% or greater that the warming is human-caused.

POSTSCRIPT: Commenting on another U.S. Supreme Court decision, terminating his last-ditch challenges to the 2020 election result, Trump insisted again that he was the true winner of the contest. He did not wish to say, exactly, how victory was stolen from him, however, because the companies that his toadies insisted had rigged the vote have been suing those toadies left and right.

Latest to be called to account: Mike Lindell, of MyPillow-right-wing-nut-send-in-the-troops-to-change-the-election results infamy. Lindell is looking at a damage suit for $1.3 billion. But he’s so delusional, he insists he has been hoping he’d be sued, so he can prove in court how right he has been all along.
